The New Hampshire, or TNH, is the "University of New Hampshire's student newspaper since 1911," published by the student organization of the same name. The newspaper is published weekly on Monday and Thursday during the academic year, with a printed circulation 4,000. TNH is distributed for free in the Memorial Union Building, University housing, academic buildings, Durham businesses and other select locations in the area. The newspaper also publishes an online edition, which mimics the print edition. TNH is the second-oldest University publication still in publication; The Granite, the yearbook, was first published in 1908.


The official publisher of the newspaper is The New Hampshire Board of Governors. The Board of Governors comprises the: editor in chief, managing editor, layout editor, assigning editor, news editors (3), photo editors (2), sports editor (3), arts editor (2), copy editors (3), business manager, graphics manager and advisor (who only votes to break tie in editor in chief's appointment). The newspaper is printed off-site by [Seacoast Media Group]], it was printed prior to the 2005-06 academic year by Seacoast Newspapers located in Stratham, New Hampshire.


The newspaper is divided into four main sections: News, Commentary (opinion section), Arts & Living (Friday's edition), Sports. The New Hampshire still uses the traditional tabloid layout, unlike most newspapers today which use a broadsheet. A popular feature of the paper is "On the Spot," which is a page featuring a question (usually humorous) with the answers and photographs of nine students.


The newspaper is primarily funded by advertising revenue and also receives a subsidy from the University of New Hampshire Student Activity Fee. In fiscal year 2005, the paper had an operating budget of $140,336, $104,000 came mainly from advertising revenue and $36,336 from the Student Activity Fee.


On September 20, 1911, the first issue of The New Hampshire, "Volume 1, No. 1," was sold for $0.05 a copy or $1 for a year-long subscription. It replaced the New Hampshire College Monthly, a student magazine created in 1893, by a handful of students of the Culver Literary Society. In its first issue, The New Hampshire greeted students of New Hampshire College by proclaiming:

"The College Monthly is dead, bound over and passes into the great beyond whence from it can never come back. Its last years were ones of strife and difficulty but the end came in quietness with all bills paid... However, that is gone and we are with this issue starting a new era in New Hampshire College. This first issue of The New Hampshire is one that is making history for it is the first-ever weekly newspaper that has ever been issued by the students of this college... The New Hampshire greets you! And we start with the feeling that we are at the beginning of a new epoch, vigorous, broad, and promising from this paper is bound to make the college better known to the world and more loved by its friends."

During 1916, The New Hampshire urged New Hampshire College (became UNH in 1923) to illuminate the Thompson Hall tower clock, which was installed in 1893. TNH even offered student assistance with the electrical wiring. NHC subsequently installed lights to illuminate the clock which still keeps time today.
