The Chafford School is a mixed secondary school with academy status located in the London Borough of Havering in Rainham, London, England. The school is due to join the Harris Federation in September 2016 and will be renamed Harris Academy Rainham.

The school specialises in Business & Enterprise, and has a dedicated business studies wing. As of 2011 approximately 1000 pupils in the 11- to 16-year-old age range attended The Chafford.

The school is partnered with five local primary schools: Rainham Village Primary School, Parsonage Farm Primary School, Brady Primary School (with whom The Chafford shares a border), Beam Primary School, and Purfleet Primary School.

The Chafford also offers a Saturday Academy, which is originally aimed at Year 11 students for revision classes and coursework catch up.

A series of events are held annually for school leavers, including a prom at Ye Olde Plough House (Essex), and a leaver’s lunch at the end of the term.

History

The school was opened in 1934 by Essex County Council as Rainham Senior, later Secondary Modern, School, Upminster Road, for 360 boys and girls. It moved in 1950 to new buildings in Lambs Lane for 450 children. It was enlarged in 1962 and 1971 and was renamed in 1973. In 1967 control of the school passed from Essex County Council to the London Borough of Havering. In April 2008 the school became self-governing with Foundation status.

In a 2009 Ofsted report,[1] the school was described as a good and improving school and many areas of its work were judged to be outstanding.[2] As a result, it was oversubscribed on an annual basis and Ofsted noted that its popularity was growing.

However, a subsequent Ofsted inspection in June 2015 determined that the school required improvement in all areas.[3]

At the start of the academic year 2013 the foundation school successfully converted and gained academy status.

Following several years of declining results and an adverse Ofsted inspection it was announced at the beginning of 2016 that the school would join The Harris Federation of Schools in September 2016. It will be renamed The Harris Academy, Rainham.[4]

Headteachers

The current headteacher is Gary Pratt who took up the post in April 2012 but announced that he was leaving in July 2016 [5] The previous headteacher was Cheryl Hassell, who was appointed in 1994 and retired after 18 years service. She succeeded David Spurdle who was appointed in 1989. Previous to that the headteacher was Allan Grantham.

Examination results

Examination results had been steadily improving for many years up to 2012 and latterly over 65% obtained at least 5 passes at A* to C including English and Mathematics. These figures were well above national and local averages. However, results then began to decline and pass rates significantly dropped to well below the national average in 2013, and similar results were attained in 2014. There was a further decline to 40% in 2015.[6]

Uniform

The Chafford adopts the British tradition of school uniform. The Chafford uniform consists of a black blazer with the school badge, a white shirt or blouse, a red and black tie (or plain red for prefects) and black trousers or a skirt for girls.
