Thales Italia Spa - Chieti Site, a subsidiary of the Thales Group, is a leading manufacturer of tactical communications equipment, including the ST@RMille, TR@CER, MELANIE Systems and ESTHER CBRN Systems currently fielded with the Italian Army and NATO forces worldwide. It is currently involved in the Joint Tactical Radio System program, fielding its radios.

History

Thales Italy, with research and manufacturing plants in Chieti, Florence, Gorgonzola, Vergiate and Rome, operates in the field of electronic and communication systems for Defence, aeronautical navigation auxiliary systems, railway signaling systems and other high tech business.

The site in Chieti (the only building owned by the company), which counts about one hundred employees, more than 60 working in research and development and with a 40-year history of competences and know- how, always represented the pride of the research on new technologies, design and production of devices and systems for the Defence market, also developed by means of government funding and research projects.

Throughout the years, working with a wide network of local companies and cultivating the partnerships with the Universities of Abruzzo Region and central Italy, many crucial projects were developed (with patents and peer-reviewed scientific publications) for Italian, German, Dutch, Indian and Arab Ministries of Defence, for Italian Home Office and for some private companies.

On March 2016 the Thales group decided to dismiss the Chieti site, to concentrate the Italian business around the Florence and Milan sites, thus destroying the tactical communications competence centre, and losing more than 40 years of accumulated experience on many advanced technologies.

Dispute in progress

During last years, the systematic weakening of the Chieti site has been conducted, removing local management figures. Moreover, recruitment and investments activities have been stopped. All these events are in strong contrast with the trend of the Defence market and, unfortunately, with the latest terrorist events.

Last 21st March, in front of representatives of Italian Ministry for Economic Development, the management of Thales Italia has declared the willingness to stop and transfer activities to other Italian sites, with the concurrent transfer of a business unit to a Malaysian company.

This decision has been taken despite the various meetings among Thales Italia management, the Unions, the government representatives and the strong efforts made by National Institutions and Abruzzo Region in offering all the necessary means to re-launch the activities of Chieti site.

The goal of our fight

On 22nd March all Thales Italia workers belonging to Chieti site declared the beginning of the indefinite strike with suspension of all work-related activities and the occupation of the building.

The protest actions are intended to call up the company to a constructive dialogue and targeted to safeguard the skills and professionalism of a site with over forty year experience in the field of defense.

It must be emphasized that the Thales represents the opportunity, for the entire Abruzzo territory, to maintain a high level of quality of work within its industrial system, with regard to the ability to design innovation, to do research and to produce culture.
