Tahira Asif (13 July 1961 - 19 June 2014)[1] was a Pakistani politician and a Member of National Assembly of Pakistan.[2]

Political career

She was elected to the National Assembly of Pakistan on a reserved seat for women on PML-Q ticket in General Elections 2002. She joined MQM in 2007 and ran for the Parliament of Pakistan in General elections of 2008 and 2013 from Constituency NA-126, Lahore losing both times. However MQM awarded her the reserved seat in the Parliament, where she continued to serve till her death.[3]

Death

She was assassinated on Wednesday, 18 June 2014, hit by a bullet in lower torso and left thigh, by two armed men, while she was buying fruit from a stall, at the main Hafeez Taib Road in Lahore. She was admitted to Shaikh Zayed Hospital, shot four times, where she died on 19 June 2014. Widespread condemnation of attack was observed from different parts of the society, Sindh Assembly on 20 June 2014 passed a resolution condemning the attack, MQM announced three days of mourning. National Assembly of Pakistan paid her tribute and demanded inquiry into her killing.[4][5][6][7][8]Minister for Defence Production, Rana Tanveer Hussain, on behalf of the Federal and Punjab governments, assured the House that proper action on investigations will be taken.[9]Altaf Hussain, leader and founder of the Karachi-based political party, Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), said that her murder was a target killing from religious extremists as she had not been provided adequate security.[10]This after he himself, was under a probe by the Metropolitan Police Service, of Greater London, for charges of Money laundering.
