Süleyman Demirel University (Kazakh: Сүлейман Демирел атындағы Университет, Süleyman Demirel atındağı Universitet, Russian: Университет имени Сулеймана Демиреля,Turkish: Süleyman Demirel Üniversitesi, abbreviated as SDU) is a university in Kaskelen, Almaty, Kazakhstan. It is named after Süleyman Demirel, the former prime minister and president of Turkey.

The university was established in 1996, by the initiatives of the president of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev, and the former president of Turkey, Suleyman Demirel.

Campus

SDU has been using its new “Smart Campus” since the academic year of 2011-2012. The campus was specially built with the capacity for accommodating more than 7000 students. There are 8 faculties at the university, of which courses are instructed in English and Kazakh languages. The new campus offers an excellent learning environment with its 16 lecture theatres, 120 auditoriums, 3 research centers, 8 computer labs, 2 internet cafés, conference hall, stadium, gym, medical center, 2 halls of residence and 2 comprehensive libraries, which are based on electronic cataloging system and search engine. Additionally, the campus houses 3 canteens and coffee bars. At the moment, some parts of the campus are under construction.

Types of programmes offered

SDU offers full-time degree programmes in different levels. Undergraduate degrees are being taught at four faculties, which are divided into some specific professions. Actually, the university building and campus are being expanded, which means some other areas are expected to be added.

Master’s degrees can be obtained at SDU in seven areas, which are instructed in English. These courses are designed fully in concord with the real loads of modern society.

Moreover, SDU provide opportunities to everyone who wants to conduct research at some specific PhD programmes.

Advanced language courses are offered for all at the SDU Language School, who are intending to learn English and Turkish for academic and business purposes. Generally, almost all interested persons can attend. Furthermore, specially designed IELTS and TOEFL tests are taught and trained by highly qualified language instructors.

Faculties

Faculty оf Philology

The Faculty of Philology offers possibilities for interdisciplinary work, as well as specialization in the fields of foreign language studies, the study of a foreign language (French, Turkish or Chinese), translation studies and Kazakh language and literature. SDU students learn languages through the medium of target foreign language.

The faculty is engaged with regional, national and international arenas of higher education. The international staff profile adds value to its programs of studies.

In addition to teaching at schools and specialized linguistic colleges, potential careers for graduates include translation and interpreting for international companies (at home or abroad), representing companies in public relations, assisting business managers (sales managers and marketing officials), managing office documents, managing language-related and information technology-involved projects, secretarial and library work, administrative work in private schools, ELT management and coordination in language schools, etc.

Faculty of Law

Faculty of Law offers classes by mixing theory with practice by conducting mock sessions on kinds of real cases. Moreover, legal documents and instruments are discussed from different points. Generally, the Faculty of Law puts its effort to prepare excellent specialists in the field of law, who will be able resolve legal issues after their study.

In the final year, extra courses are taught by orienting and dividing students into more specific specialisations, such as civil, state jurisdiction, criminal law, international law, and others. Additionally, law students conduct introductory practical collaborations with law enforcement agencies, since modern jurist should be able to deal with the flow of changes and working diverse legal problems. These qualities can be acquired at this faculty.

Faculty of Engineering

The main areas taught at the Faculty of Engineering cover fundamental and advanced knowledge in the development of integrated web applications, algorithms, software designing, database systems, discrete mathematics, logical programming, cryptography, computer networks, computer simulation and others. Additionally, information architecture, design, and processing in the information systems framework are practiced. Final year students in Mathematics are expected to study specific pedagogical issues at schools and other educational institutions.

Language School

Teaching English at the Language School is based on the communicative approach to plunge into the atmosphere of a foreign language.

IELTS and TOEFL courses

There are English courses available for all ages, statuses (whether you are a student of college/university, a pupil or working person) and time. Average group size is from 8 to 12 students, which gives opportunity for students and teachers to interact and enhance the learning experience.

Classrooms are equipped with classroom furniture, whiteboards, computers, audio and video system and free internet access. Courses can be taken either in the morning or afternoon shifts.
