History

Spring is on the way is a painting by Vladimir Ivanovich Ovchinnikov (Russian: Владимир Иванович Овчинников)(1911-1978), well-known Russian painter, who lived and worked in Leningrad, member of the Leningrad branch of Union of Artists of Russian Federation,[1] regarded as one of the leading representatives of the Leningrad School of Painting,[2] most famous for his landscape paintings.

In painting the author captures the view of the high bank of the Volkhov River in the Staraya Ladoga with the Church of St John the Baptist, with the Chapel of St Paraskeva and bell tower.

For the first time the painting was exhibited in 1988 on Vladimir Ovchinnikov posthumous exhibition in the Leningrad Union of Artists.[3] In 1994, picture again was shown in the halls of the Leningrad Union of Artists at the exhibition of «The Paintings of 1950-1980s by Artists of the Leningrad School».[4] In 2007 the painting «Spring is on the way» was reproduced and described among 350 art works by Leningrad artists in the book «Unknown Socialist Realism. The Leningrad School»,[5] published in Russian and English.
