Scoil Mhuire, Clane

Scoil Mhuire is a co-educational Post Primary School owned by the State and controlled by a Board of Management made up of 10 members.( 2 Parents, 2 Teachers, and 6 representatives from the Trustees who are Kildare V.E.C. and the Presentation Sisters).

The Presentation Sisters were the original founders of the Secondary School. They changed to Community School Status in 1983 when they moved into the present building. They have completed an extension and Sports Hall to the school to make it a modern Educational premises.

At present there are over 1000 students (roughly 50:50 boys and girls, age 12 to 18) and a teaching staff of 70+.

The school operates the Transition Year, the Leaving Cert Applied and the Leaving Cert Vocational Programme. There is a strong emphasis on the use of I.C.T. in these courses. Students also pursue programmes in physical education and religious studies. Students are encouraged to involve themselves in a wide range of extracurricular activities both indoor and outdoor. There is an excellent record of achievement in these areas.

Adult Education is promoted very strongly and Scoil Mhuire is one of the largest Adult Education schools in the country and Computer Studies and AutoCad is usually over subscribed, in fact they frequently have to run extra classes.

Transition Year

All of the students are in school everyday and take classes such as Social and Political, IT, Journalism and Drama as well as all of the core subjects: English, Maths, Language etc. They also get to sample all of the option subjects for the Leaving Certificate such as History, Art, Music, Geography etc. Transition Year students take part in Work Experience every Friday in at least two different workplaces. The students are given the responsibility of finding their own places of work for the year. Every year there is a Transition Year UK tour, featuring a trip to Alton Towers.

Annual Events

Each year the first and second year students of the school perform a musical. This is always a popular occasion, with some of the musicals being performed including Back to the 80s and Mamma Mia. Teachers oversee the production, and the cast is made up entirely of 1st and 2nd year students.^[1] The Fith Year Fundraiser raises money for a nominated charity every year also.
