Sarojini Naidu College for Women

Sarojini Naidu College for Women, established in 1956, is the women's college in Dum Dum, Kolkata. It offers undergraduate courses in arts and sciences. It is affiliated to West Bengal State University.^[1] This name commemorates the legacy of freedom fighter and poet Sarojini Naidu.

Accreditation

Sarojini Naidu College for Women is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC).^[2] It was accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), and awarded B++ grade

Music group

SNCW also has a famous musical group, of the same name, composed of students of the college even though there is no programs in Music Theory. The group formed in 1968 at the college in secret since the school had banned singing and dancing by its students. It wasn't until 1994 that the group went public and changed school policy. Since then they have released multiple albums and live recordings. Starting in 2002 the group releases one album ever school year, by that year's members.

The band performs all of their songs with a capella instrumentation. The songs are based mainly on the courses of study at the college that the women of group study. Songs about Astronomy, History, Sociology and even Mathematics have charted in India and other countries. They also include political and religious songs. In 1995 and again in 2004 they played shows by the request of the Queen of England. They have performed for U.S. Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, heads of state and the United Nations. In 2004 the group played several sold out shows in Pakistan.

Their last album was released in April 2012 and is called Impossible to One.
