Rajesh Roshan Lal Nagrath (born 24 May 1955) is a Hindi cinema music composer. He is the younger brother of film director and producer Rakesh Roshan and the uncle of Hrithik Roshan.[1][2][3]
Personal life
Rajesh Roshan is the son of Hindi film composer Roshan and younger brother of film director and actor Rakesh Roshan. He is also uncle to actor Hrithik Roshan, in whose films he composes many songs for example Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai (2000), Koi Mil Gaya (2003), Krrish (2006), its subsequent sequel Krrish 3 and Kites (2010). He has a son named Eshaan and a daughter named Pashmina.
Career
Rajesh Roshan had a successful association with Basu Chatterjee, Dev Anand, Mohammed Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar and Kishore Kumar. He shot to fame with the score for Kunwara Baap and later Julie for which he won the Filmfare Best Music Director Award.[4] The first break for him was given by Mehmood.
Rajesh Roshan scored well in the big break given by Mehmood for Kunwara Baap (1974) and then by Dev Anand in three back to back hit films: Des Pardes, Man Pasand, and Lootmaar. Then he composed melodious tunes and made Kishore Kumar sing them in films like Mama Bhanja, Doosra Aadmi, Muqaddar, Swami, Priyatama, Yehi Hai Zindagi, Ek Hi Raasta, Swarg Narak, Inkaar, Khatta Meetha, Baaton Baaton Mein, Do Aur Do Paanch, Kaamchor, Hamari Bahu Alka, Bhagwaan Dada, Ghar Sansar followed by films with Rajesh Khanna like Janta Hawaldar, Nishaan, Babu and Aakhir Kyon?. However, since 1985 he has composed songs mostly for films made by his brother. His hit song filmed on Helen, i.e. "Mungda...Mungada..." from the film Inkaar in 1978 is still a landmark in cabaret songs in Bollywood. Most of his hit music numbers have been rendered by Kishore Kumar till 1987. His career got affected by death of Kishore Kumar in 1987. In the nineties to 2005, his hit numbers were sung mainly by Udit Narayan.
He regularly made singers Kishore Kumar and Mohammad Rafi to sing duets together in films including Muqaddar, Doosra Aadmi, Aap Ke Deewane and Swayamvar. He made Vijeta Pandit sing all the duets along-side Kishore Kumar in the films Ginny Aur Johnny. The duet "O Dil Jaani" from Udhar Ka Sindur sung by Kishore Kumar with Anuradha Pudwal and "Kar Gayi Mast Mujhe" from Dillagi (1978) sung by Suman Kalyanpur with Kishore remains popular today. The legendary Kishore-Lata duets composed by him include "Bhool Gaya Sab Kuch" from Julie, "Umar Toh Pyar Karne Ki" from Zindagi, "Thoda Hai Thode Ki Zaroorat Hai" from Khatta Meetha, "Suno Rani Tumne" from Mama Bhanja,Chal Kahin Door Nikal Jayein and Ankhon Mein Kajal Hai from Doosra Aadmi, Jaisa Des Waisa Bhes from Des Pardes, Chaaru Chandra Ki Chanchal Chitwan from Manpasand,Main Tera Husband from Shriman Shrimati, Oonche Neeche Raaste and Disco 82 from Khuddar, Tujh Sang Preet from Kaamchor and Ankhiyon Hi Ankhiyon Men from Nishaan. He also composed legendary Kishore-Asha duets like Jis Kaam Ko Dono from Ek Hi Raasta, Chhodo Yeh Nigahon Ka Ishara from Inkaar, Nahin Nahin Koi Tumsa Haseen from Swarg Narak, Suniye Kahiye from Bataon Bataon Mein, Kuchh Sochoon from Duniya Meri Jeb Mein, Mein Kuwari Albeli from Babu and Chot Lagi Hai Kahan from Ghar Sansar. His other famous duets include Kuchh Soch Ke Pyar Kiya Hai from Charandas by Rafi-Asha and Hum Dono Milike sung by Mukesh-Asha from Tumhari Kasam. The duet song Sun Jane Jaan Khata Hai Pyar in 1981 from the film Sannata was the first duet sung by Alka Yagnik and Udit Narayan together. He is the first music director who made Amitabh Bachchan sing. He also composed the song "Jaane Tamanna" for the internationally acclaimed film Valley of Flowers (2006) by Pan Nalin.
In the 1990s, other than Laxmikant-Pyarelal and Bappi Lahiri , Rajesh was one of the few music directors who continued to give good melodious music with films like Kabzaa, Jurm and Bahaar Aane Tak (1990) – and after another dull phase delivered with, Karan Arjun and Sabse Bada Khiladi (1995), Papa Kahte Hain (1996), Koyla (1997), Keemat – They Are Back, Daag: The Fire (1999), Dastak (1996), Kya Kehna (2000), Na Tum Jaano Na Hum (2002).
Rajesh Roshan delivered several hit music scores pairing with his brother Rakesh, who had emerged as a director of great stature. The two worked on films like Kaam Chor, Jaag Utha Insaan, Khoon Bhari Maang, Khel, Kishan Kanhaiya, Kaala Baazar, King Uncle, Karan Arjun, and Koyla. Rajesh scored the music for "Kaho Naa...Pyaar Hai", the launch vehicle of Hrithik Roshan, and one of his brother's most ambitious projects. The film achieved significant success. The composer also won the Filmfare Award for Best Music.[4] He has composed the music of several Hrthik-starring, Rakesh Roshan-directed films, such as Koi... Mil Gaya, Krrish, Kites and Krrish 3.
Work with Singers
Rajesh Roshan is considered to have the longest career span starting in 1974 till date, as a result the composer got an opportunity to work with almost all the famous singers from five decades with some fine work like Kunwara Baap, Julie, Des Pardes, Swami, Janta Hawaldar, Swayamvar, Jurm, Khoon Bhari Maang, Karan Arjun, Papa Kehte Hai, Kaho Na Pyar Hai, Kya Kehna, Koi Mil Gaya and Kites.
During the 1970s and 1980s, he mostly worked with Mohammed Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Mukesh, Lata Mangeshkar, Suman Kalyanpur, Mahendra Kapoor, Asha Bhosle, Yesudas, Bhupinder, Amit Kumar, Nitin Mukesh, Usha Mangeshkar, Manhar Udhas, Shailender Singh, Shabbir Kumar, Mohammad Aziz, Anuradha Paudwal, Sadhana Sargam, Alka Yagnik, Vijay Benedict, Anwar and Preeti Sagar.
During the 1990s and 2000s the composer continued his work with some of the singers who sang for his compositions of the 1980s along with Kumar Sanu, Udit Narayan, Abhijeet, Hariharan, Lucky Ali, Sonu Nigam, Sudesh Bhosle, Vinod Rathod, Sukhwinder Singh, Kavita Krishnamurthy, Adnan Sami, Shaan, KK, Sunidhi Chauhan, Sapna Mukherjee, Babul Supriyo, Kamaal Khan, Mahalakshmi Iyer, Alisha Chinai, Hema Sardesai, Chitra, Sneha Pant, Kunal Ganjawala, Taz, Pamela Jain and others.
And recently for Krazzy 4, Kites and Krrish 3, he has also worked with the new generation singers like Mohit Chauhan, Vishal Dadlani, Kailash Kher, Zubeen Garg, Neeraj Shridhar, Suraj Jagan, Anushka Manchanda, Monali Thakur & Sowmya Rao.
Singer Udit Narayan recorded his first Bollywood song "Mil Gaya Mil Gaya" from the movie Unees-Bees along with legendary singer Mohammad Rafi and composed by Rajesh Roshan.
