Rama Subramaniam Gandhi is a Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India. He was appointed as Deputy Governor in April 2014 after a protracted period of uncertainty and controversy following the retirement of Anand Sinha whom he succeeded at office.[1] Gandhi looks after, inter alliance Banking Operations & Development, Risk Monitoring, Supervision of NBFCs and Urban Cooperative Banks, Information Technology, Legal Matters and Expenditure & Budgetary Control.[2] He has also been an Executive Director of RBI and a Director of the IDRBT.

Early life and education

R. Gandhi was born in 1956 in Tamil Nadu. He obtained his post graduation in Economics from the Annamalai University. He also has post graduate level qualifications in Capital Markets and Management Information System from The American University and the City University of New York. He has studied Mathematical Economics and Econometrics from various universities, besides having proficiency in computer networking and systems programming. He also studied Gandhian Thoughts at Madurai University.

Personal life

He has two sons, both of them are in the US. One of them runs a startup in the food tech space.

Career in RBI

Gandhi joined Reserve Bank of India in 1980. He worked in diverse areas including currency management and information technology and was also the Executive Assistant to the RBI Governor for more than three years. He had a brief stint at the Securities Exchange Board of India.

He was elevated to the position of Executive Director of RBI on 1 March 2011. As executive director he looked after Internal Debt Management and Currency Management, besides the strategic and crucial area of Human Resource Management. He was appointed as Deputy Governor on 3 April 2014.[3]

Outstanding achievement

Gandhi has built expertise and experience in such diverse fields as currency management, international banking, derivatives, payment systems, information technology, human resources management and regulation of financial markets (money, securities, forex and capital markets). His seminal contribution has been in the field of regulation of OTC Derivative Markets in India and Liquidity Support to Government Securities Market.
