History

Former logo of Primera Hora

Primera Hora was founded in 1997 by Antonio L. Ferré, son of Puerto Rican governor and former El Nuevo Día owner Luis A. Ferré.[1] Since 1990, when newspaper El Mundo was closed, emerged the question of what type of media were readers using to keep themselves informed. Around this time, El Nuevo Día conducted a survey to know the audience’s perception of currently distributed newspapers and the results indicated that an important sector of the public demanded an alternative in the newspaper’s market. This population reflected tendencies among people who had stopped reading news or newspapers as well as groups of married people formed of two persons working outside of their home and lacking time to read.

After a careful market analysis, the Ferré-Rangel family decided to launch a new publication. This launch was preceded by local and international market research about how to create a newspaper that was easy to read, with short articles, concise, dynamic, full of pictures and with great use of colors. It is with this mission that Primera Hora is born and its first edition was published on November 17, 1997.

Ever since its first issue, Primera Hora has guarded its image by renovating and redesigning several of its principal sections such as Así (March 1999), Panorama (August 2000) and Acción Deportiva (August 2003). Changes that responded to the readers' requests and best interests. Other sections and commercial magazines were created also in benefit of the readers.

Primera Hora founding members are Carlos Nido, General Manager (currently Sales VP for El Nuevo Día) and Héctor Olave, Director. On March 1, 1999, Jorge Cabezas became its second Director and on February 1, 2006 Rubén Keoseyán assumed general direction of the newspaper, continuing the editorial lineage that characterizes this publication. Currently, Linda Hernández is the associate director of the newspaper.
