Port City Brewing is a craft brewery in Alexandria, VA. It is the first production brewery to operate in Alexandria since Prohibition,[1][2] when the Robert Portner Brewing Company closed its doors. Port City Brewery opened its doors in February 2011.[3]

The brewery currently produces five flagship beers: Monumental IPA, Essential Pale Ale, Optimal Wit (a Belgian White Ale), Downright Pilsner and a porter.

2012 Derecho

The June 2012 North American derecho knocked out power for one million electricity customers in the Washington, DC area, including the brewery. A tank of fermenting pilsner warmed excessively, and rather than let it spoil the brewery changed the style from pilsner to steam beer. The strategy saved the beer, relabeled Derecho Common, and attracted media attention as much for the story as the beer itself.[4]
