PayAnywhere is a mobile and storefront payment service provided by North American Bancard.[1]

The PayAnywhere Mobile app and credit card reader allows users in the United States to accept credit card payments using their smartphone or tablet by swiping a credit or debit card through a mobile credit card reader (plugged into the audio jack of the smartphone or tablet), or by manually entering a credit or debit card number via the PayAnywhere mobile app. The app and credit card reader are compatible with both Apple and Android devices.[2]

On April 8, 2014, PayAnywhere launched PayAnywhere Storefront. PayAnywhere Storefront is a free touchscreen tablet and stand with a built-in credit card reader meant to replace traditional terminals in stores.[3]

Announced in late August 2015, the latest version of the PayAnywhere reader for iOS phones and tablets will feature Apple Pay support, as well as NFC, EMV and magnetic stripe. Aimed at small vendors, like coffee shops and food trucks, it's expected in September for $40 exclusively from Apple retail stores and online store. Android tablet support is expected in early October. [4][5]

History

North American Bancard developed the PayAnywhere app internally. PayAnywhere officially launched in January 2011 on the iOS platform.[6] In May 2011, PayAnywhere made its app available for Android devices.[7] PayAnywhere launched an app for BlackBerry smartphones in May 2012, supporting BlackBerry models OS 4.7 or later.[8]

In June 2012, PayAnywhere released its Android SDK to complement its iOS SDK, which was made available in December 2011. The SDKs, available in Basic and Advanced, allow developers to embed credit card processing functionality into their own apps.[9][10]

PayAnywhere Storefront was launched in April 2014.

Overview

PayAnywhere Mobile allows people to accept credit card payments on their smartphone or tablet. The rate is 2.69% per swipe and funds are deposited the next business day, according to the company.

PayAnywhere Storefront pricing starts at 1.69 percent for swiped credit card transactions, including American Express, Visa, MasterCard, Discover and PayPal all with next-day funding.

PayAnywhere serves as the mobile payments solution for many associations and businesses, including Origami Owl, the MLMIA, and more.[11][12]

Several Girl Scout councils and Boy Scouts/Camp Masters partnered with PayAnywhere, to allow troops to accept credit card payments for their 2013 cookie sales. The Girl Scouts of San Gorgonio, Arizona Cactus-Pine, Colorado, and Kansas Heartland are among the councils that elected to use PayAnywhere.[13][14]

Business Model

PayAnywhere Mobile is built under a “Pay-As-You-Go” model, with the app and credit card reader being free. They can be downloaded, at no cost, in the App Store and Google Play. Merchants can accept Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express credit and debit cards. PayAnywhere merchants pay 2.69% per swipe and 3.49% + $0.19 per keyed transaction. As of December 2015, PayAnywhere charges inactivity fees[15] for idle accounts; otherwise they claim there are no monthly fees or cancellation fees.[16]

When it first launched, PayAnywhere Mobile was priced at 2.69% + $0.19 per swipe and 3.49% + $0.19 per keyed transaction. However, in March 2012, the company dropped the $0.19 transaction fee on swiped transactions.[17]

PayAnywhere Storefront pricing starts at 1.69 percent for swiped credit card transactions, including American Express, Visa, MasterCard, Discover and PayPal all with next-day funding. The solution also includes data encryption, tokenization and fraud protection. Additionally, in-app and online reporting provide small and medium-sized business owners with analysis tools. Users can easily monitor their daily sales, create inventories and generate customized reports of all sales activity in real time. This enables users to track sales immediately or over the long term and evaluate sales based on time of day, week or month to assess inventory orders and product promotions.

Features

PayAnywhere Mobile includes the following features in its app:[18]

PayAnywhere Storefront includes all of the features listed above, along with a free tablet, stand with built-in reader, app and additional mobile reader.

Retail

At CTIA Wireless 2012, PayAnywhere announced its intention to expand into the retail channel, making its mobile payment solution available in stores and online from retailers nationwide.

In November 2012 the company announced its nationwide retail rollout was live. Nationwide retailers include Wal-Mart, OfficeMax and The Home Depot. Specialty retailers include Pep Boys and Hastings. Regional retailers include Fred Meyer and Meijer. PayAnywhere is also available for purchase online at Wal-Mart, OfficeMax, and Amazon.com.[19][20][21]

If purchased at retail, the PayAnywhere credit card reader is $10. A $10 rebate is given after the first swipe.

Awards & Reception

PayAnywhere was a finalist for the Emerging Technology (E-Tech) Awards under the Mobile Applications: Mobile Commerce, Shopping & Rewards category.[22]

Black Enterprise named PayAnywhere the “Most Dynamic Mobile App” at the 2012 Black Enterprise Best in Show Awards at CTIA Wireless 2012.[23]

J.P. Morgan analyst Tien-tsin Huang commented that “being born out of a top merchant processor gives PayAnywhere an advantage in understanding the complex needs of businesses looking to accept card-based payments.”[20]

In a mobile payment roundup, Eric Geier of PCWorld advised “PayAnywhere’s system is a good choice if you’re looking for a simple processor or even a POS-like system that supports cash drawers and can print receipts.” [24]

Jessica Dolcourt of CNET reviewed PayAnywhere at CTIA Wireless 2012 and said “Payanywhere is taking swipes at Square’s credit card reader with a strong offering of its own and national distribution.”[25]
