Pazhamarneri (Palamaneri) is a small village situated on the South bank of the River Kaveri. It is located 30 km northwest of Thanjavur and 32 km northeast of Trichy. It is 2.5 km from Thirukattupalli.

History

Even though it is a small village, the name of this village along with surrounding villages is mentioned in historical books since the Chola Period.

Subsequent generations settled in adjoining villages along as well as across the Kaveri. These villages include Nemam, Kuthur, Pachambettai (near Lalgudi) and Onbathhuveli (near Thirukattupalli ).

Direct disciples of Thyagarja the saint Composer of Thiruvaiyaru hailed from Palamarneri. Sir P. S. Sivaswami Iyer, a great Philanthropist who established a high School in Tirukkattupalli and a Girls High School in Mylapore, Chennai belongs to this sect. PS Sundaram, educationist and recipient of award from the Government of Tamil Nadu for his translation of Tirukkural, Bharati's Poems etc. into English also hails from this sect. N. Kesi a Flautist of repute was a youngest musician of her days to cut a gramophone record( when gramophones were hand wound for playing)

Shri Krishnan Raman Brahmarayar, Defense Minister of Rajaraja Chola was from this village. Even though he is Saivite by birth, he followed Vaishnavism through his lifetime. His son Arun Mozhi Bhattan served the ministry of Rajendra Chola I during the Chola Period. The descendants of their family were then called as Pazhamarneri Brahmarayas and commonly constitute the Palamaneri Brahatcharanam of the Iyer community. They live in huge houses with areas more than 5,000 sq ft (500 m2) in size. Their basic occupation is the supervision of agricultural lands. Until the 1970s most of them possessed a good area of land. However, due to change in the political scenario in Tamil Nadu they fled to major cities, but some continued residing here thriving on agriculture based business. It once called as Dhina Chinthamani Chatur Vedi Mangalam. During the period of Mutharaiyas it was in the control of the king Perumbidugu Suvaran Maran and at that time called as Palamarnery.As one Maraneri is adjacent to this village it is called as Palamarnery in the meaning as "Old One"

Sivaswami Iyer, a great Philanthropist who established a high School in Tirukkattupalli and a Girls High School in Mylapore, Chennai belongs to this sect.The Flood during 1961 ruined the eastern part of this village and it again renovated. High Court Judge Justice Mr P.N,Ramasami Iyer also belongs to this village.Subba Sastrigal, a geat Sanskrit poet and vidwan of Chaturveda is also from this village. Anmeeka writer cum Music Critic cum great Asro-Spiritualist Sri Guruvayurappadhasan Sundararaman belongs to this village and he is conducting Nadasawara Sammelanam every year from 1969 during the period of Navarathri ten days, conferring titles to all Nadaswaram Thavil Vidwans at his established Guruvayurappan Athishtanam at here and doing good to poor people by way of Keraleeya Prasnams, as he is having a "PARACHARA NADI" of his own.He is well versed in Astrology and doing Pariharams in simple ways to get rid of all evil spell.Politicians and Cine actors throngs to this village only because of him and to seek his divine guidance in every walks of their life from time to time. He wrote "Kalaignar Arruppadai" and " Puratchi Thalaivi Pillai Thamizh"in Tamil as Sangam Literature and won so many credentials.The Great Trichy Lawyer both in Civil, Criminal and Medico-legal Mr B.S.Manjunath, M.A, L.L.M , (son of the above said Guruvayurappa dhasan) is also born in this soil and well versed in Karnatic Music Key Board. He created a "pani" of his own creation by way of combining Oboe, Tenarsax,Grand Pipe,and English Horn sounds etc. in different ratios, making them as computerised creating a Nadaswaram effect as Dr Tiruvengadu Subramania Pillai and as Vedaraniam Vedamurthy and playing as Nadaswaram and now famous in and around India.He is the deciple of Andankoil Kalaimamani Nadaswaram A.V.Selvarathnam Pillai who conferred a title to him as "The Ekalavya Of A.R.Rahman" Harikatha Vidwan B.Raveendran is also from this village,performing Harikathas,and Puranic Discourses in Trichy AIR as A Grade Artiste,and in Pothigai,Jaya Televisions. PS Sundaram, educationist and recipient of award from the Government of Tamil Nadu for his translation of Tirukkural, Bharati's Poems etc. into English also hails from this sect. Kalaimamani Smt. N Kesi, disciple of Flute Mali, hails from this village. Flute G.Sridhar (disciple of Smt. N. Kesi) of Chennai/Singapore and Playback Singer Mahathi are also from this village.Sangheetha Kalanidhi The Great Swaminatha Iyer was a great Violinist from this village and his son the great surgeon Mr P.S.Ramasami Iyer is the great deciple of Dr Renghacari and praised even by himself as "Knife Ramasami".

As well Famous Tamil writer Balakumaran (Ezhuthu Chitthar), Erstwhile Election commissioner of India Ganesan, PR Subramaniam (Palamaneri Ramachandran) the first Public grievance Officer of CMDA (Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority) hail from this village. The Grama Deivam (Village Deity who is believed to protect the residents of the village) is "Alankariamman"at Nemam. There is a temple with regular rituals even today for Alankariamman. As well there is a famous Siva temple in this village that attracts many visitors during festival days such as Arudhra Dharsanam, Sivarathri. There is also a VenugopalaSwami temple in the same village.
