The Necessity Is a Mother Tour was a concert tour by rock band ZZ Top. Launched in the wake of the cancelled Aerosmith/ZZ Top Tour, the tour's concerts were performed in theatres and arenas from September through November 2009. Band members Billy Gibbons and Dusty Hill dressed in black biker jackets, along with similar hats and boots. The Necessity Is a Mother Tour consisted of three legs and 28 shows.

Concert overview

Out of the 28 shows performed, each had a similar set list, with 20-23 songs performed. The concerts usually began with techno music played through the PA system, during which the band would walk on stage and begin the show.

Main set

Each show opened with a performance of "Got Me Under Pressure." Following "Got Me Under Pressure", the band performed "Waitin' for the Bus", "Jesus Just Left Chicago", "Pincushion", "I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide", Willie Brown's "Future Blues", "Cheap Sunglasses", and "Mexican Blackbird." "My Head's In Mississippi" was only featured as a snippet usually before segueing into "I Need You Tonight." "Brown Sugar" and "Party on the Patio" were played in many shows. "Foxy Lady" and "Just Got Paid" were always part of the main set. "Gimme All Your Lovin'", "Sharp Dressed Man", and "Legs" were also performed.

Encores

The encores typically started with a medley of "La Grange", "Sloppy Drunk Blues", and "Bar-B-Q." The show usually closed out with "Tush." "Jailhouse Rock" and "Tube Snake Boogie" were also occasionally performed.

Additional songs

A total of 26 different songs were played throughout the tour. John Lee Hooker's cover of One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer" was played at the show in Mannheim, Germany. Elmore James' "Dust My Broom" was performed at the concert in Boston.
