The National Institute Of Technology Delhi (abbreviated NIT Delhi or NITD)(Hindi: राष्ट्रीय प्रौद्योगिकी संस्थान दिल्ली, NITD) is a public engineering institution located in Delhi, India. It has been declared as an Institute of National Importance by an act of Parliament of India. It is one of the NITs along with other National Institute of Technology institutions in India.

History

The National Institute of Technology, Delhi is one of ten newly set up NITs during the 11th Five Year Plan by the Ministry of Human Resources Development (HRD). The first batch of students was admitted and academic activities of NIT Delhi were started in the year 2010-11. Since inception of NIT Delhi, for the first two years the academic activities were carried out at National Institute of Technology, Warangal, the mentor institute for NIT Delhi. Now the institution functions on a temporary IAMR campus, sector 7, Narela. NIT Delhi started its academic session in 2010 with three undergraduate B.Tech degree programmes in Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering and Electrical and Electronics Engineering. The academic activities of NIT Delhi were initiated at NIT Warangal in year 2010 which later moved to a temporary campus at Dwarka, New Delhi in June 2012 and now currently running at IAMR Campus, Narela (February 2014). From academic year 2013-14 the intake in each B. Tech programme was increased to strength of 60 students. M.Tech programme in the discipline of Electronics and Communication Engineering with an intake of 15 students was introduced from the academic year 2013-14 followed by Ph.D. programme which has started from January 2014 with intake of seven research scholars and M.Tech Programme in Computer Science and Engineering (Analytics) with an intake of 15 students is yet to start for Academic year 2014-15.

Organisation and administration

The rules, regulations and recommendations for the functioning of all NITs are decided by the NIT Council. The members of the council consist of representatives of all NITs and the Ministry of HRD. The governance of NIT Delhi is in the hands of the NIT Delhi Board of Governors. The director of the institute is an ex-officio member of the Board. It decides on all the aspects of running of the institute including curriculum, faculty, etc.

Academics

NIT Delhi currently offers only engineering programs in graduate, undergraduate and doctorate level. The Institute offers four-year bachelor's degree programmes in following fields of engineering: Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering and Electrical and Electronics Engineering. Mechanical Engineering degree will also be given soon. It offers two-year master's degree programmes in following fields of engineering: Electronics and Communication Engineering [2013-2014], Computer Science and Engineering (Analytics) [2014-2015].From the academic session 2013-14, NIT Delhi has admitted students to its postgraduate programmes on the basis of marks obtained by them in the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering-GATE and through CCMT Counseling. The intake of students to these postgraduate programmes is 15 each. It offers Doctorate of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree programmes in following fields of engineering: Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering and Computer Science and Engineering.

Admissions

The admissions to the B. Tech program of the institute is solely carried out through the Joint Entrance Exam (Main) organised by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) on the directions of the Ministry of Human Resource development, Government of India. The seats are allotted by the joint seat allocation authority(JOSAA) and Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB). Fifty percent of seats are reserved under Home State category for Delhi and Chandigarh students. The remaining fifty percent seats are filled by students of other states.

Admissions for foreign nationals is carried out by Direct Admission for Students Abroad (DASA) under the Ministry of HRD. The admissions are on the basis of the SAT score of the eligible candidates. The number of seats available for foreign nationals in each branch at NIT Delhi is 4 and these are over and above the intake (currently 60) of each branch.

Admissions to the M.Tech Programmes are made on the basis of performance in GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering).

Branches

NIT Delhi started admitting students from the academic session 2010-11 with an intake of 30 students in each of the following branches of Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) programmes:-

Intake at undergraduate level enhanced to 60 w.e.f. 2013-14.

NIT Delhi started Master of Tech. In Electronics and Communication Engineering w.e.f. 2013-14.

NIT Delhi started Doctoral programmes w.e.f. 2014.

NIT Delhi is going to start Master of Tech. In Computer Science and Engineering with specialisation in Analytics w.e.f. 2014-15.

In near future NIT Delhi plans to offer more programmes and disciplines of studies and to offer Masters and Doctoral programmes in all disciplines of interest to the institute with overall strength of 20,000 students.

Departments

Currently, the following four departments are functioning in the institute:-

Library

The Central Library, NIT Delhi was established in the year 2012 (10 June 2012) in Dwarka to facilitate the access to information resources to faculty and students of the Institute. It moved to its present location IAMR Campus, Narela Institutional Area on 18 February 2014. It is housed on the first floor of the building with beautiful surroundings and is in midst of the campus which is easily accessible from all departments and hostels. All the faculty members, students and staff of the Institute are entitled to access all the library facilities and services. The library is growing rapidly with exponential increase in number and type of collection to serve the information needs of the clientele in the field of Social Sciences & Humanities and Engineering & Physical Sciences. The automation of library service is also being carried out through RFID-cum-library card.

Computer Centre

The Computer Centre, NIT Delhi was established on 18/02/2014, to cater to the computational requirements of the Institute.

The Computer Centre maintains and manages WiFi facility through rack mounted blade servers in the campus having High speed (single mode) fiber backbone, managed by Layer 4 Switches providing 250 Mbit/s (1:1) bandwidth Speed. These networking facilities will be extended to Hostel and Residential areas.

Sports Facilities

The college has a well equipped sports department with arrangements for several indoor and outdoor games. Indoor games include Badminton, Table-Tennis, Carom and Chess and outdoor games include cricket, football and basketball. There are well maintained grounds for football and volley ball along with a groomed cricket pitch; also the Institute have separate basketball court for students.

Research

The NIT Delhi has laid great emphasis on theoretical and experimental research. The thrust areas of research include: VLSI and Embedded Systems, Advanced Magnetohydrodynamics, Mathematical Modelling of fluid Dynamics.

Student Life

Being a newly formed NITs, however, its being ranked top among other new NITs and having a good competition with the old NITs. Prof. director Ajay K. Sharma is very positive about the future of the institution and always inspires his students. The faculty team and teachers are new and very energetic. Students here find the interaction with the teachers very good. The institute is full with the necessary required facilities for being a good engineering institution; labs, library and computer centers are avail with all the latest technology equipment. More lab facilities and workshop equipment are being availed to the students as per their requirements. Since, the institute functions on a temporary campus, students might find some of the facilities missing as compared to other well established institutions. Its permanent campus being constructed at a rapid phase at Narela and the temporary campus will soon be shifted to the well built campus building, with latest high-tech facilities and laboratories.

The interaction between students and their seniors are very good. The institution is completely ragging are thereand very not away from politics. The seniors always help their juniors with all the academic as well as personal stuffs. Apart from studies, students also enjoy games and various other extra-curricular activities, events and competitions in the institute.

Festivals

NIT Delhi has some clubs and organisations functioning within the campus such as cultural club, photography club and sports club. It observes Saptrang, a cultural festival every year during May. Its celebrated keeping in line with the target of providing the students with the best opportunities for all round development. It is a day long delightful proceeding including 15+ competitive events, participation from colleges in and around Delhi, a live DJ night and entertaining food and game stalls. "Saptrang '15" promises to be a riveting affair! It also witnesses "Echoes", The introductory Cultural Night of NITD including performances by students of the college and a DJ Night.

Hostels

The hostels of the institute are located within the IAMR campus, in the residential quarters of the nearby Satyawadi Raja Harish Chandra Hospital and from the year 2015 onwards to My Floor 2 residential apartment, Kundli, Haryana. The new hostel is avail with all the necessary facilities and is being separately provided to the first year students (only for boys). Another hostel of the institute is located at YWCA, Rohini which is solely used for accommodation of girl students. Mess facility is available in all the premises.

Buses are provided for the transportation of the girl students in Rohini to-and-from the Institute premises as well as for boys to My floor 2, Kundli. One side journey takes about an hour reach the girls hostel and 20 minutes for boys hostel. Also, bus facility is also provided for day scholar students to-and-from *Jahangirpuri metro station to the institute. The journey takes about 30 minutes.
