Nélson Cabral Semedo (born 16 November 1993), is a Portuguese professional footballer who plays as a defender for Benfica.

Club career

Born in Lisbon, Semedo is a youth prospect from Sport União Sintrense; debuting in the first-team at age 17.[1] On 12 January 2012, he and Manuel Liz, signed a five-year deal with Benfica, set to begin on the ensuing season.[2] His first year was spent on loan to Fátima, making a little less than 30 caps on the third division side.[3]

He returned to Benfica in the following season, being placed on the reserve side, and having his professional debut on 10 August 2013, in a 2013–14 Segunda Liga game against Trofense.[4] After nearly 60 appearances for the B-team, he was touted as a future replacement for Maxi Pereira.[1][5]

With Maxi Pereira's departure, Semedo extended his contract with Benfica until 2021 and joined the first-team in their pre-season tour in North America.[6] On 9 August 2015, he made his debut for Benfica's main squad in the domestic Super Cup loss against Sporting CP.[7] A week later, Semedo scored his first goal for the Eagles, against Estoril in the Primeira Liga.[8] After establishing himself in the starting eleven, Semedo suffered a setback in October 2015, when he sustained an injury while in the national team.[9] The injury to his right knee required surgery, with Semedo expected to miss two months.[10]

International career

On 2 October 2015, Semedo was called up to play for the Portugal national team, in UEFA Euro 2016 qualifying matches against Denmark and Serbia.[11] He debuted in the latter game on the 11th, playing the entirety of a 2–1 win at the Partizan Stadium in Belgrade.[12]
