Mechi Multiple Campus (Nepali: मेची बहुमुखी क्याम्पस) is one of the constituent campuses of Tribhuvan University located in Bhadrapur municipality of Jhapa district.[1][2] Founded in 1964, it has been fulfilling the social responsibility by providing higher education in nominal fees.[3] Since June 2016, the college has been operating under the leadership of Kamal Guragain, who is referred to as "Campus Chief".[4] As of September 2014, there are 109 academic and 54 administrative staffs in the college.[3]

Originally, the college started with an Intermediate of Arts (IA) program in humanities, which was soon followed by some undergraduate programs. At present, the college serves undergraduate and postgraduate programs in a number of disciplines. However, all intermediate programs have been scrapped since 2010, following Tribhuvan University's decision to discontinue Proficiency Certificate Level programs. The termination of PCL programs brought about a sharp decline in the number of students in the college.[3]

History

With inauguration by Brigadier General Bhupalman Singh Karki, Mechi Multiple Campus was established on 12 Ashwin 2021 BS (27 September 1964 CE). With no private building for the next 5 years, classes in early years of inception were held in the evening in the premises of either Bhadrapur Red Cross or Bhadrapur High School. The construction of college's physical infrastructure began to gather pace from 2024 BS (c. 1967 CE),[lower-alpha 1] and it took three years until completion. All of the administrative and academic activities of the college were then shifted to its own private premises in 2027 BS (c. 1970 CE).[3]

The college celebrated its golden jubilee in the year 2071 BS.[1] The golden jubilee was marked with various programmes and extra-curricular activities all year round, with a major three-day long cultural event on Ashwin.[5] The cultural event was inaugurated by the then-President Ram Baran Yadav, who had graced in as the chief guest. It also attendance from a host of alumni, donors, and a few nationally acclaimed personalities, such as Yuba Raj Khatiwada, Krishna Prasad Sitaula, Agni Kharel, etc.[6][7]

Campus

The campus, which spreads over an area of 16 bighas (c. 27 acres),[lower-alpha 2] is located in a rural environment, about 1 km northeast of Bhadrapur Airport. The area has a good access to road transportation. The campus yard is mainly divided into two academic buildings – one for the science faculty and the other for the rest.[1]

The college currently offers the following undergraduate and postgraduate programs:[3]

Among the courses offered, Bachelor of Science in Tea Technology and Management (BScTTM) is a unique academic course taught only at Mechi Multiple Campus.[8] With approval of Tribhuvan University, the course was introduced in 2011 (2068 BS) as an addition to the ongoing B.Sc. programs offered by the college.[9] A large part of Nepal’s tea industry is based in Eastern Nepal, particularly in Jhapa and Ilam districts, and this course has been offered with the aim of producing and availing the requirement of qualified and skilled human resource in the tea sector.[8] Despite the enormous potential, the tea management course has failed to attract students, with the enrollment dropping drastically from 23 students in the first batch to just 6 in the third batch.[9] The decrement in the number of students can partly be attributed to the ineffective publicity of the academic course, and partly to the uncertainties looming over its prospects.[9]

On 29 December 2016, the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) raided six colleges in Jhapa, including Mechi Multiple Campus, as per the complaints lodged at the anti-graft body that some of the professors of public colleges were also teaching in private colleges alongside. Umanath Oli – the then Chief at Mechi Multiple Campus – was reported to have admitted that some professors had invested in private colleges and also took classes there, but he also claimed that they had been doing so even before the provision of requiring approval from the university monitoring commission came into effect.[10]
