Matthew James "Matt" Robinson (born 1 June 1994) is an English professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for National League club Dagenham & Redbridge.

Career

Early career

Born in Leicester, Leicestershire,[1] Robinson began his career as a youth player in the Leicester City academy. He made 43 appearances in the youth team over the course of two seasons, scoring 14 goals, but was not offered a contract and left the club in early 2012.[3] Following his release, he produced a video with footage from his time in the Leicester academy to try and win a professional contract.[4]

Luton Town

Robinson went on trial with Conference Premier club Luton Town later in 2012 and impressed manager Paul Buckle enough in pre-season to be offered a two-year professional contract.[3] He made his Luton debut in a 2–0 away win over Kidderminster Harriers on 14 August 2012, coming on as a late substitute.[5] He made five further substitute appearances and two starts under Buckle's management,[6] before John Still was appointed as Luton manager on 26 February 2013.[7] Still used Robinson in a starting role in six league games,[6] scoring his first senior goal for the club in a 3–1 win at Southport on the final game of the 2012–13 season.[8][9] In June 2013, Robinson signed a contract extension until the summer of 2015.[10]

Robinson was primarily an unused substitute for much of the first half of the 2013–14 season, though he did play in the team's FA Cup and FA Trophy games.[6] On 26 December 2013, fellow Luton midfielder Jonathan Smith suffered a double leg break during a 2–1 away win over Barnet,[11] promoting Robinson to a more regular place in the team.[12] He went on to play in all but one of Luton's matches in the second half of the season.[6] He scored his first goal of the campaign in a 3–0 home win over Chester on 22 March 2014,[13] scoring his second three days later in a 2–1 away win over Grimsby Town.[14] 19-year-old Robinson, who played alongside 18-year-old Cameron McGeehan and 20-year-old Pelly Ruddock Mpanzu in a youthful midfield trio, was praised by John Still for his performances.[15] Luton won the Conference Premier title with three games to spare of the 2013–14 season, with Robinson playing in a total of 31 games.[16]

He made his Football League debut on 9 August 2014 as Luton beat Carlisle United 1–0.[17] On 1 October 2014, Robinson signed a three-year contract extension to keep him at Luton until 2017.[18]

On 31 October 2014, Robinson joined Kidderminster Harriers on a one-month loan.[19] He went on to make six appearances for the Harriers before returning to Luton,[6] declining the chance to stay for a further month to fight for his place at Luton.[20] He made a total of 12 appearances for Luton throughout the season, but was placed on the club's transfer list in May 2015 alongside five other players.[21]

On 21 August 2015, Robinson joined National League club Grimsby Town on a one-month loan.[22]

On 23 October 2015, Robinson joined Woking on a one-month loan after failing to impress at Grimsby Town.[23] A day later, he made his Woking debut in the FA Cup, featuring in a 3–0 shock defeat to Maidenhead United.[24] On 19 December 2015, Robinson scored his first Woking goal in a 5–1 thrashing over Gateshead, in which he poked home a cross from Dan Holman.[25] On 14 January 2016, Robinson's loan deal at Woking was extended until the end of the season.[26] He made 31 appearances for the club, scoring two goals during his loan spell.[6]

On 10 May 2016, Luton announced that Robinson had once again been placed on the transfer list.[27][28] However, just one week later, he was released from his contract by mutual consent one year early as part of the reorganisation of the squad by Luton manager Nathan Jones.[29][30] He made 57 appearances and scored three goals since joining the club in 2012.[30]

Dagenham & Redbridge

Robinson signed a two-year contract with newly relegated National League club Dagenham & Redbridge on 7 June 2016.[31]

Personal life

Robinson is a grime MC, performing under the stage name Kamakaze.[32]
