Mai Agan (born 5 May 1988 in Kuressaare) is an Estonian bass guitarist and composer.
Biography
Agan started playing classical violin at a local children's music school when she was 6 years old and piano when she was 8. She graduated 7 years later and switched to electric bass at the age of 16. After graduating high school she moved to Tallinn in 2007.
She has graduated from Georg Ots Tallinn Music school (2010) after which she moved to Sweden; Skurups Folkhögskola (2011), The Royal College of Music in Stockholm (2014) where she is currently doing there master's degree in Performance-Jazz.
Agan is mostly known for her work with Estonian pop sensation Kerli, Swedish singer-songwriter Linnea Henriksson, American country artist and guitarist Doug Seegers and her own jazz-fusion group MaiGroup that she formed in 2010. MaiGroup has released two studio albums: "Luv" (2013) and "You" (2015) consisting of original compositions written, arranged and produced by Agan.[1]
In June 2015 she performed at Stockholm Waterfront with Jackson Browne after his band members Greg Leisz and Bob Glaub saw her jamming on the streets of Stockholm with Doug Seegers.
In 2015 and 2016 she recorded for the new album of one of her long time musical heroes - American singer, songwriter and guitarist, a two-time member of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame - David Crosby, from The Byrds and Crosby, Stills & Nash.[2]
In 2015 and 2016 Agan toured in Scandinavia with Doug Seegers.
She has also collaborated with Greg Leisz, Ebbot Lundberg, Brady Blade, Håkan Broström, Anders Widmark, Carola Häggkvist, Tõnis Mägi, Riho Sibul, Magnus Lindgren, Stockholm Strings, Norrbotten Big Band and others.
Awards
She has won grand prix at Alo Mattiisen Music Days (2004), Surpriser award at Tartu Jazz (2007), Best instrumentalist prize at Uno Naissoo Compositions Contest (2010) and Alice Babs Jazz Award (2016), nomination for Jazz Cat Newcomer Award by Swedish Radio 2016. [3]
