Luke Samuel Garbutt (born 21 May 1993) is an English professional footballer who plays as a defender for Championship club Wigan Athletic, on loan from Everton.

Club career

Early career

Born in Harrogate, North Yorkshire,[1] Garbutt attended Harrogate Grammar School where he played in the Year 7 School Football team that reached the Harrogate and District Cup Final in 2005. His impressive performances for his junior club team, Pannal Ash Juniors saw him signed by Leeds United where he began his professional career. Shortly after leaving school, he was signed from their academy by Everton in 2009, for an initial fee of £600,000 which was set by a tribunal as the two clubs could not agree a fee.[3]

In the 2012–13 season, on 29 August 2012, Garbutt made his Everton debut, coming on at half-time during a 5–0 League Cup second round win over Leyton Orient.[4]

Ahead of the 2013–14 season, Garbutt signed a new contract with Everton, that will keep him until 2015.[5]

Garbutt made his Premier League debut for Everton at Southampton in April[6] and built on that with his first ever appearance for England's Under-21s in a 3-1 European Championship qualifying win over Wales the 19th of May 2014.[7]

Loan to Cheltenham Town

On 29 September 2011, he joined Cheltenham Town on an initial one-month loan deal.[8] He made his professional debut as Cheltenham beat Wycombe Wanderers 3–1 on 4 October 2011 in the Football League Trophy.[9] His FA Cup debut was memorable as Cheltenham were drawn away to Premier League team Tottenham Hotspur, however the game ended 3–0 to Tottenham.[10] He continued to extend his loan spell and on 31 January 2012 he scored his first goal, with a free kick in a 3–1 win away to Macclesfield, sending Cheltenham to the top of the league in the process.[11] He scored again the following game, this time opening the scoring against Crawley Town with a goal from outside of the area.[12] On 13 February he extended his loan spell by a further five weeks.[13]

Loan to Colchester United

On 13 September 2013, Garbutt joined League One side Colchester United on an initial 28-day loan.[14] He made his debut the following day, in a 2–2 draw against Bradford City at Valley Parade.[15] On 28 January 2014, Everton recalled Garbutt from his loan spell at Colchester United following the lengthy injury to Bryan Oviedo.[16]

Everton

After making his first start for the club at the beginning of the 2014–15 season in a League Cup defeat to Swansea City in September,[17] Garbutt then started the final two UEFA Europa League group stage games, helping Everton finish top of the group with a clean sheet in a 2–0 win away to Wolfsburg.[18] Garbutt was part of the starting 11 in both legs of the Europa League round of 16 tie against Swiss side BSC Young Boys in February, with Everton progressing 7–2 on aggregate.[19][20] This was the beginning of an extended run in the first team for Garbutt, starting in the following Premier League game against Arsenal,[21] taking advantage of an injury to regular left-back Leighton Baines to maintain his place in the starting 11.[22]

On 30 June 2015, it was announced that Garbutt signed new five-year deal with the club.[23]

Loan to Fulham

On 25 July 2015, Garbutt was loaned to Championship side Fulham for the 2015–16 season.[24] He scored his first goal for Fulham in a 2–2 draw with Bolton Wanderers on 19 December 2015.[25]

Loan to Wigan

On 16 August 2016, Garbutt returned to the Championship, joining newly promoted Wigan Athletic on a four-and-a-half-months loan.[26]

International career

Garbutt has represented England at under-16, under-17, under-18 and under-19 level.[27]

He made his England U-16 début against Germany in March 2008 and made his final England U-16 appearance against Scotland in November 2008. Four months earlier, he had made his England U-17 début against Finland.

He helped England win the 2010 UEFA European Under-17 Football Championship and played in the final where England beat Spain 2–1.[28]

On 17 May 2013, he was named in manager Peter Taylor's provisional squad for the 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup.[29] Initially he did not make the final 21-man squad, however after Leeds United defender Sam Byram pulled out through injury he was named as a replacement in the squad.[30] He made his debut on 16 June, in a 3–0 win in a warm-up game against Uruguay.[31]

On 11 August, he was called up to the England under-21 squad to replace Southampton left-back Luke Shaw, for the friendly match against Scotland.[32] Garbutt was an unused substitute as England won the game 6–0.[33]
