The Louisville Bulls were an American football team located in Louisville, Kentucky.[1]

History

The Bulls were founded in 1988,[2] under Louisville Bulls INC, by Don Hillerich. By 1994, the Louisville Bulls were incorporated as a non-profit organization. The team played as an independent in 1988 and 1989. In 1990, the Bulls joined the Hearts of Ohio Football League (HOFL). The following year, the Bulls won the HOFL championship. In 1992, the Bulls joined the Mid Continental Football League (MCFL).[2] In 2004, the Bulls were nationally ranked as the 8th best semi-pro football team in the Midwest.[3] In 2008, the Bulls would win the National Division of the MCFL and play the Detroit Seminoles in the championship game, their only appearance in the MCFL title game.[4] In August 2011, the Bulls folded.[5]

Team identity

Nickname

The Bulls were inspired by the Jacksonville Bulls of the United States Football League .

Logo

The first helmets worn by the team featured a similar design to that of the Jacksonville Bulls, which included a wrap around logo of a bull.[6] By the 1990s, the team would switch to their primary logo, which was a black bull in the shape of an L.

Uniforms

Throughout the majority of Bulls history, the uniforms remained constant. The Bulls always wore red helmets, with either red or black face mask. Red jerseys were always used for home games and white jerseys for road games. The Bulls switched from red to black pants several times, but settled on black pants after 2004.

During the 2008 MCFL Championship game, the Bulls borrowed silver pants from Holy Cross High School and wore them during the game. Subsequently, the Holy Cross football team wore the Bulls' black pants during an October 4 game vs DeSales High School.

The Bulls held a historical riviarly with the Kings Comets, a semi-pro football team out of Cincinnati, Ohio.
