Live from Planet X is a live album by MF Doom, released on March 5, 2005 through Nature Sounds. It was recorded live in San Francisco, California, on 15 August 2004. Originally titled Live at the DNA Lounge, the album was initially given away with Special Herbs, Vols. 5 & 6, an instrumental hip hop album by DOOM under his "Metal Fingers" alias. It contains tracks from almost all DOOM-related projects at that point, including Operation: Doomsday, Take Me to Your Leader, Vaudeville Villain and Madvillainy.

The incorrect listing of "Go with the Drawls" and "Gas Flows" is the result of a miscommunication between the DJ and DOOM. The beat for the track "Go with the Flow" begins while DOOM begins to rap "Gas Drawls". However, after the first verse, DOOM instructs him to switch the beat to the "Gas Drawls" and they begin the song again.

Critical reaction

The live album received mixed reactions at the time of its release. Peter Hepburn, writing for American music website Cokemachineglow, awarded the album a score of 81% and praised it by saying:

Not only is Live from Planet X a fantastic album by live album standards, this could stand up against pretty much any rap album released so far this year. DOOM manages to avoid all the pitfalls of the live album: Planet X is well-produced and engineered, DOOM comes off as an engaging and impressive performer, and it provides a broad introduction to his broad back-catalogue. DOOM once again has set himself up as the man to beat in the rap game.

However, some viewed the album as a cash-in. Although praising some aspects of the album, Stylus Magazine writer David Drake concluding his review by saying:

So what’s the point? Money, most likely. DOOM knows his audience, and knows that it’s an audience weaned on LPs, live albums, and rarities collections, not radio singles, mixtapes, and club play. For the discerning hip-hop fan, whatever their musical distribution allegiance, this is a pretty unnecessary (if occasionally interesting) addition to a catalogue already packed with fascinating material.
