• Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories is set in this year.
• The House of the Dead (1996) takes place on December 18, 1998.
• Hardline (1996) is set in 1998.
• The first trilogy of the Resident Evil series takes place in 1998: Resident Evil Zero (2002) is set on July 23, Resident Evil 1 (1996 and 2002) is set on July 24, and Resident Evil 2 (1998) and Resident Evil 3: Nemesis (1999) are set in September.

• Ring Raiders (1989): This cartoon series is set in 1998.

• Bride of Chucky, set immediately after the events of Child's Play 3.
• Deep Impact: May 10, 1998: In Richmond, Virginia, at a star party, teenage amateur astronomer Leo Biederman first spotted the comet next to the stars Mizar and Alcor. He sent the picture to Dr. Wolf. Dr. Wolf found that the comet would hit Earth, but he died in a car crash before warning humanity.
• Purple Storm: From June 23 until July 6, 1998, New Hong Kong International Airport at Chek Lap Kok opens while the historic Old Hong Kong International Airport at Kai Tak closes.

• The satire Memoirs of the Twentieth Century (1733) takes the form of a series of diplomatic letters written in 1997 and 1998.
• Time Out of Joint (1959) by Philip K. Dick is set around 1998.
• The Lathe of Heaven (1971) by Ursula K. Le Guin starts in 1998.
• The graphic novel V for Vendetta (1982–1989) is partly set in 1998.
• Patlabor (1988–1994): The manga's story starts out in the (then) future year of 1998.
• Adrian Mole: The Cappuccino Years (1999) by Sue Townsend ends in 1998.
• In the fantasy series Harry Potter, the title character defeats his nemesis Lord Voldemort on 2 May of this year once and for all.
