List of Super Mario speedrunning records

The platform games of the Super Mario series of video games are very common speedrunning candidates. This is a list of speedrunning records of Super Mario video games.

Super Mario Bros.

By use of various glitches and shortcuts, Super Mario Bros. (1985) can be beaten in around five minutes. The records below are achieved without tool-assistance, meaning the movement of Mario is entirely carried out via a gamepad.

Date Name Time Sources
5 October 2016 darbian 4:56.878 [1][2]
4 October 2016 Kosmic 4:57.194 [3][4]
13 April 2016 darbian 4:57.260 [5][6]
14 January 2016 darbian 4:57:427 [7]
19 October 2015 darbian 4:57.627 [8][9][10]
25 June 2014 Blubbler 4:57.693 [10][11][12]
25 March 2014 Andrewg 4:59.09 [12][13]

darbian noted that his 2015 record still wasn't perfect, as he could still save some time in level 4-2, though he stated that besides this, "there is no other time save that a human has ever done (even in practice) prior to 8-4." darbian also made a few small mistakes in 8-4, the final level of the game.[10] He went on to beat his record first by 0.2 seconds and then by another 0.167 seconds in 2016. After that, he announced that he would not try to improve his time further, as he had "reached my potential in this category." The current world record may be the fastest time humanly possible, though a slightly faster time has been achieved using tool assistance.[5]

Super Mario Bros. was beaten with the lowest possible score for the first time on February 20, 2014. Player NotEntirelySure had to play through the game without defeating any enemies or collecting any items, as to not go over the minimal score of 500 when beating the game.[14][15]

American speedrunner darbian holds the record for beating Super Mario Bros. without using warps. His record stands at 19:04, set on November 15, 2016.

Super Mario Bros. 2

The current speedrun record of Super Mario Bros. 2 is in hands of ILuvMario, who beat the game in 8 minutes and 30 seconds on September 25, 2015.[16]

Super Mario Bros. 3

On April 30, 2014, Lord Tom and Tompa beat Super Mario Bros. 3 in a tool-assisted speedrun in under three minutes by using a particularly advantageous memory corruption glitch. After completing this run, Lord Tom petitioned to make runs using this glitch a separate category of speedruns, so that previous records will remain important.[17] The current record of Super Mario Bros. 3 without using any warps whatsoever is held by CujoIHSV, who beat the game in 51 minutes and 27 seconds.[18]

Super Mario World

The current 11 Exit [Note 1] record of Super Mario World (1991) is in hands of speedrunner GreenDeathFlavor, who beat the game in 9 minutes and 46 seconds in May 2016. Runners-up are Area51 and drams_cat, with a time of 09:46.71 and 09:46.97 respectively.[19] In August 2016 speedrunner PangaeaPanga beat Super Mario World in 15:59 seconds while blindfolded.[20]

The current 100%[Note 2] speedrun record of Super Mario World, for which the player has to go through all of the game's 96 exits exists, is in hands of speedrunner Akisto, who completed the game in 1 hour, 23 minutes and 10 seconds in July 2016.[21]

For Any% [Note 3] (also known as 0 Exit) it is possible to make the credits of Super Mario World roll by injecting arbitrary code into the game's memory in the first level of the game. The current world record for this category is set by FURiOUS in July 2016 with a time of 1:15.23 [22]

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island

The 1995 sequel to Super Mario World, Yoshi's Island, is a particularly popular game at Games Done Quick.[23] Its current 100% speedrunning record is held by _Trix, with run time of 2 hours 30 minutes and 12 seconds.[24]

Super Mario 64

To progress in Super Mario 64 (1996), the player has to collect stars from the game's various levels. Once a player has collected enough stars, they can continue to the next part of the game. However, by using glitches, it is possible to sequence break and beat the game without collecting enough stars. Furthermore, the game includes more stars than needed to beat the game, allowing for 100% runs with a clear objective.

In early 2015, a world record of collecting all 120 stars in Super Mario 64 was "accidentally" set on 1 hour, 42 minutes and 15 seconds. Speedrunner Nero, set this record during a race with former record-holder Puncayshun. As it was a race Nero couldn't reset and he saved and quit twice during his run, therefore extending his final time by several seconds.[25][26] The record was later improved again to 1 hour, 40 minutes and 51 seconds by Cheese05,[27] followed by Puncayshun who improved it down to 1 hour 40 minutes and 44 seconds. The most notable thing that has changed in this run compared to Nero's and Cheese05's run is that Puncayshun collected the first star in the first Bowser fight using a glitch called BLJ (Backwards Long Jump).[28] Cheese05 now holds the 120 star world record at 1 hour 40 minutes and 10 seconds.

The current world record of beating Super Mario 64 using glitches to skip large portions of the game - without collecting any stars in the process - sits on 6 minutes and 44 seconds. This record was set by akira06072525 in August 2015. The run was a three-second improvement over the former record set by Xiah.[29][30]

Super Mario Sunshine

Nindiddeh holds record for Super Mario Sunshine Any% at a time of 1 hour, 15 minutes, and 44 seconds.[31] Nindiddeh also held the record in 120 Shines 100% at a time of 3 hours, 5 minutes, and 23 seconds, but he was passed by Trevor "AverageTrey" who finished in 3h5m15s. Trey broke his own record on October 22, 2016, when he finished in 3h4m18s.

Super Mario Galaxy

There are four main categories in Super Mario Galaxy speedruns: Any% with Mario, Any% with Luigi, 120 Stars with Mario, and 120 Stars with Luigi. Vallu111 currently holds the record in all of these categories, with times of 2:34:26, 2:28:48, 6:06:01, and 5:52:54, respectively.[32] Playing with Luigi is faster than playing with Mario because he has a faster run speed and higher jumps, in addition to being allowed to skip the introduction cutscenes when starting with Luigi.[33]

Super Mario Galaxy 2

There are three main categories in Super Mario Galaxy 2 speedruns: Any%, 120 Stars, and 242 Stars. Vallu111 currently holds the record in all of these categories, with times of 3:01:57, 5:50:28, and 9:17:19 respectively.[34] Unlike the first Super Mario Galaxy, there are not separate categories for Mario and Luigi, since the game does not allow you to start as Luigi. The ability to switch to Luigi is unlocked after completing Bowser's Galaxy Generator during a run.
