List of A Certain Magical Index light novels

A Certain Magical Index is a Japanese light novel series written by Kazuma Kamachi with accompanying illustrations drawn by Kiyotaka Haimura. The series follows Tōma Kamijō, a high school student in the scientifically-advanced Academy City who meets a young nun named Index from the Church of England whose mind has been implanted with the Index Librorum Prohibitorum: all of the magical texts the Church has removed from circulation. His encounter with her leads him to meet others from the secret world of science and magic and an adventure with his friends where science and magic collide.

ASCII Media Works published 24 volumes under their Dengeki Bunko imprint between April 10, 2004[1] and October 10, 2010. Two of the 24 novels are short story compilations released in July 2007 and November 2008.[2][3] The first volume of a sequel series titled New Testament: Toaru Majutsu no Index was published on March 10, 2011. Yen Press have licensed the series in North America and began releasing it under their Yen On imprint in November 2014.[4] Toaru Majutsu no Index became Dengeki Bunko's No. 1 bestseller in May 2010,[5] and in August 2010, it was reported that the novels had hit 9 million copies sold[6] and became the fifth best selling light novel in Japan.[7]

A Certain Magical Index was adapted as a 24-episode anime television series by J.C.Staff, which aired in Japan between October 2008 and March 2009, covering the events of the first six novels. A second season of A Certain Magical Index aired between October 2010 and March 2011 titled A Certain Magical Index II.[8]

Tōma, a young man with a mysterious power in a city where advanced sciences and psychics are the norm, meets Index a young nun from the Church of England draped on his balcony, being pursued by magicians who seek the Index Librorum Prohibitorum, a collection of Forbidden tomes within her mind. Tōma goes on vacation to a seaside hotel with his family and Index. Things get weird with the exception of himself when everyone at town appears to have switch bodies and nobody notices the change. Three stories set on August 31. Index has been summoned by the British Royal Family to come back to England and investigate a mysterious explosion at the Eurotunnel. Russia declares war against Academy City; in turn, the city prepares to invade Russia with their allied nations. As the world braces for World War III, Tōma and Lessar head to Moscow to stop Fiamma of the Right, who has finally gained the knowledge of the Index Librorum Prohibitorum and now seeks Sasha Kruezhev as part his goals. On the day of the Ichihanaransai Ollerus' forces and Gremlin clash in Academy City over Fräulein Kreutune which causes a great amount of chaos. Tōma wakes up in a mysterious small black space. It turns out he is in the high-class girls only school (attended by Mikoto Misaka) known as Tokiwadai Middle School. Apparently a magician named Umezaki Yuuga has placed a highly destructive Homa Altar known as the Altar of the Wisdom King inside the School Garden. Meanwhile outside the garden Motoharu is going on a rampage involving the supposed death of his stepsister Maika. He is also investigating the mysterious Agitate_Halation project. The project involves the innocent Fremea Seivelun and can supposedly create a world without heroes.

Tōma has been returned to his original phase by Othinus. Now the whole world wants Othinus dead and is hunting her down. To make her situation worse Ollerus' fairy spell is slowly killing her from the inside. Despite everything the Magic God has done Tōma decides to become the enemy of the entire world and help her in retrieving her missing right eye from the spring of Mímir in Denmark. If the eye is returned to her eye socket Othinus will return to being a human which is the only solution to both of their problems. Unfortunately Tōma is pitted against many of his friends and former enemies.

Tōma and Index go to the fancy shopping distract known as the Dianoid with Othinus (now a 15 centimeter tall fairy) in order to buy her a dollhouse to hide from Sphynx in. After their arrival all of the doors in the Dianoid lock trapping them along with ITEM and many others inside. Even worse a magician named St. Germain who claims to be a Magic God is inside the Dianoid and has strange interest in a boy pretending to be the #6 Level 5, Aihana Etsu.

Kakeru Kamisato wields World Rejector, a power opposite to Imagine Breaker which can banish anyone witch conflicting desires (or anything created by someone with conflicting desires) to a "new world" which is like salvation. With this power he has banished every Magic God in existence except for Othinus. He confronts Tōma in order to get her leading the two opposites to clash. Soon they get involved in an even bigger conflict between the Birdway sisters about the virus known as Sample Shoggoth.

After the High Priest's rampage Tōma and his classmates' high school has been destroyed and they must attend a new one. Unfortunately for Tōma, Kakeru ends up transferring to this new school. To make matters worse Kakeru's non biological sister Salome has snack into Academy City and plots to kill the Kamijõ Faction. In the background Yuiitsu Kihara plots her revenge against Kakeru for killing her sensei.

Even though it's Winter a mysterious 55°C heatwave has overtaken Academy City. Everyone is forced to stay in shelters and have to find ways to get water. Making the situation way worse are the Elements. These large creatures resemble either plants or animals and have elemental powers controlled by their cores. Tōma and his classmates go on a hunt for water but after an Element attack Tōma is separated from his shelter which helps him get closer to the cause of the heatwave and the Elements.

Thanks to Yuiitsu (who has stolen World Rejector), Kakeru has been banished to the "new world". Most of the Kamisato Faction except for the UFO girl, Fran are under her control. Fran has sided with Tōma, who is searching for a way to bring Kakeru back so the Kamisato Faction would stop following Yuiitsu. The only problem is not only are they being pursued by sll 100 girls of the Kamisato Faction, but a group known as Useful Spider (who are attempting to restore order to the city after the incident with the heatwave and the Elements) have branded them as criminals and are also pursuing them.
