The Laclede Group, Inc. (NYSE: LG) is a public utility holding company based in St. Louis, Missouri providing natural gas service through its regulated core utility operations while engaging in non-regulated activities that provide business opportunities. Its primary subsidiary Laclede Gas Company is the largest natural gas distribution utility in Missouri, serving approximately 631,000 residential, commercial and industrial customers in the City of St. Louis and ten counties in eastern Missouri. Its primary non-regulated activities include Laclede Energy Resources, Inc., a natural gas marketer located in St. Louis, Missouri.

The company is traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol LG. The headquarters are located at the Laclede Gas Building in Downtown St. Louis.

On April 29, 2016, Laclede began trading on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol SR, reflecting its new name, Spire.[1]

History

The company was one of the original 12 industrial companies that made up the Dow Jones Industrial Average but was removed in 1899.[2]

In 2014, Laclede acquired Missouri Gas Energy from Southern Union Company.[3]

Also in 2014, Laclede group acquired Alabama Gas Corporation (Alagasco). [4]

Green Marketing Award

Laclede Gas received the 2009 Marketing Best Practices Award from the Southern Gas Association in its “Green Marketing” category for their work on the “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” television show. The award recognizes a specific customer marketing effort that demonstrates a commitment to a healthier, more energy-conscious environment. Thanks to Laclede’s efforts and expertise, a home built by the show’s staff and volunteers earned a SILVER Award designation from the Home Builders Association of St. Louis under its Green Building Initiative.

Dollar-Help Support

Supported by Laclede over the past 27 years, the energy-assistance fund Dollar-Help has surpassed $1 million in annual donations for the past three years. Through its own donations and its “Check A Red Box” campaign with customers, Laclede helps elderly, disabled and other customers in need receive assistance in paying their heating bills.

120 Years on the New York Stock Exchange

On December 7, 2009, executives from The Laclede Group visited the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) to ring the closing bell and commemorate the company’s 120th anniversary of trading on the exchange. The Company first listed its stock on November 14, 1889, making it the 8th-oldest listed stock on the NYSE.

Original Green Energy Campaign

Laclede Gas recently started a comprehensive educational campaign about the environmental benefits of natural gas. It is focused on helping customers both gain a new appreciation for the green energy source already available in their homes and to better understand Laclede Gas’ role in providing solutions in a more carbon-conscious world. To share this information with customers and others, Laclede created a new online presence, OriginalGreenEnergy, to provide energy-efficiency tips, rebates and savings ideas, and background information about natural gas.

HRC Corporate Equality Rating

In 2010 the Laclede Group was given a score of 0 out of 100 for their treatment of LGBT employees. In the 2011 study, after taking appropriate steps, the Laclede Group scored a 48, making it one of the most improved companies from the previous year.
