Kadayanallur is a City in the Tirunelveli District of Tamil Nadu of India. The most important commodities such as Handloom clothes, matches, fiber, and mud-pots are being manufactured in the town. As of 2011, the town had a population of 90,360.

History

The name Kadayanallur comes from "Kadaikaaleeswara", the name of the presiding deity of Kadayaleeswarar kovil, a Hindu temple located in Kadayanallur. It is located in the foothills of the Western Ghats near the Courtallam Waterfall and Tenkasi. It is famous for saaral (drizzling), which occurs yearly from May to August. It is also known for its vast paddy and coconut fields. Most of the last generation of residents were farmers; however, many are now employed in various parts of India and in foreign countries such as the Persian Gulf, Singapore, and the United States Of America.

Kadayanallur is located at 9°05′N 77°21′E / 9.08°N 77.35°E / 9.08; 77.35.[1] The town is located on the foot of the Western Ghat, and has an average elevation of 191 m (627 ft).

The city is surrounded by paddy fields, coconut farms and lot of ponds. A small river flows in the mid of the city. There are some rocky regions on the western end of the city called locally as 'parumbu'. Attakulam, Paloorani, Thamaraikulam, Annamalai peri and last and largest of those is periyakulam are the ponds found in this city. The town is having an area of 52.25 km2. The town is situated about 16 km on the North of Tenkasi and 47 km on the south of Rajapalayam. The N.H. 208 Quilon – Thirumangalam passes through this town. The town is general is having a dry climate except during the monsoon. The Indian Postal Service Pincode is 627751. The Telecom Code (BSNL) is 04633.

According to 2011 census, Kadayanallur had a population of 90,364 with a sex-ratio of 988 females for every 1,000 males, much above the national average of 929.[3] A total of 9,810 were under the age of six, constituting 4,889 males and 4,921 females. Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes accounted for 13.64% and .42% of the population respectively. The average literacy of the town was 71.8%, compared to the national average of 72.99%.[3] The town had a total of 21076 households. There were a total of 34,039 workers, comprising 927 cultivators, 6,839 main agricultural labourers, 3,176 in house hold industries, 20,095 other workers, 3,002 marginal workers, 34 marginal cultivators, 390 marginal agricultural labourers, 569 marginal workers in household industries and 2,009 other marginal workers.[4]

As per the religious census of 2011, Kadayanallur had 55.98% Hindus, 43.42% Muslims, 0.48% Christians, 0.01% Buddhists and 0.1% following other religions.[5]
