Juan Kouyoumdjian

Juan Kouyoumdjian is a French-Argentinian naval architect specialised in ocean racing yachts. He designed all the winning yachts of the Volvo Ocean Race whilst it was governed by the Open 70 rule between 2003 and 2012. He first advocated the very shallow, very wide stern design with twin short rudders and twin daggerboards amidships that brought success to the ABN AMRO racing team in the 2005-2006 edition race. He repeated his success in the 2008-2009 and 2011-2012 editions of the race. He was principal designer for Artemis Racing in the 2013 America's Cup, in which the team's test boat had a structural failure, resulting in the destruction of the vessel and the death of sailor Andrew James Simpson.
