John Leland (born 1959) is an author and has been a New York Times journalist since 2000.[1][2][3] Leland began covering retirement and religion in January, 2004. During a stint in 1994, he was editor in chief of Details magazine.[2][4][5] Leland was also a senior editor at Newsweek, an editor and columnist at Spin magazine, and a reviewer for Trouser Press.[2][6][7]

Leland wrote Hip: The History[8] and Why Kerouac Matters: The Lessons of On the Road (They're Not What You Think).[3][9][10][11]

Education

He earned a Bachelor of Arts in English from Columbia College in 1981.[1][2]

Personal

Leland is married to his wife Risa and together they have a son named Jordan. The family resides in Manhattan, New York.[1][12]

Awards

Leland has won two awards from the National Association of Black Journalists.[1]
