Jeff Rohrer

Jeffrey Charles Rohrer (born December 25, 1958 in Inglewood, California) is a former American football linebacker in the National Football League who played for the Dallas Cowboys. He played college football for Yale University and was drafted in the second round of the 1982 NFL Draft.

Early years

After playing football at Mira Costa High School, he went on to attend Yale University. In 1981 as a senior, he led the team with 136 tackles (71 solo) and received first team All-Ivy League and All-New England honors.^[1]

That team won the Ivy League championship, tying Dartmouth College with a 9-1 overall record, was also briefly ranked in the nation’s top 20 and three of its players were selected in the 1982 NFL Draft.^[2]

Professional career

Rohrer was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in the second round of the 1982 NFL Draft, which at the time was considered a reach by the media.^[3] He spent his first three years playing special teams, until earning the right outside linebacker job in 1985.

In 1986 he was the Cowboys second leading tackler. In 1987, he was the team's third leading tackler and led the linebackers with four sacks. During training camp in 1988, he was hospitalized with disc problems in his lower back, which required season ending surgery.^[4]

In 1989 with the arrival of head coach Jimmy Johnson, he was released before the season started, as part of a youth movement.^[5] During his time with the Cowboys, he was considered a tough and outspoken player.^[6]

Personal life

After football he became a producer for television commercials. He is currently Executive Producer/Partner at Mrs. Bond, a Los Angeles-based commercial production company.^[7]
