Jean-Pierre Van Rossem (born 29 May 1945) is a Belgian stock market guru, economist, econometrician, author, philosopher,[1] Public figure, politician and former member of the Belgian & Flemish Parliament.

Life and career

He studied economics at the University of Gent in 1963-67.[2] With his final term paper 'De omloopsnelheid van het geld : theoretische begripsbenadering en praktische toepassing in België' ('The velocity of money: Theoretical approach to understanding and practical applications in Belgium')[3] he won the International Scholarship of Flanders-prize and was able to study two years of econometrics under Noble Price winner Lawrence Klein at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.[2]

Moneytron

He became famous as a stock market guru with 'Moneytron',[4] a stockmarket investment company that could offer apparently endless returns. His customers included everybody who had money in Europe including the Belgian Royal Family.[5] The Moneytron was supposed to be a super computer able to predict economic fluctuations, and the access to its room was strictly forbidden, behind a closed door in Van Rossem's office.

Van Rossem had developed a model that could predict the stock market and beat the capitalist system. His sympathies for the theories of Karl Marx did not stop him investing for the very wealthy in the world and accumulating 860 million dollars (34.692.321.673 Belgian Franc) for himself.[6] At its height, Van Rossem owned a Motor Yacht, 'The Destiny Of 89 million Dollars',[7] 108 Ferraris[8] & 2 Falcon 900s each worth 30 million Dollars.[7] Later everything was sold to pay debts.[9] Due to belief in the Moneytron system and also his sense of show and publicity he made large sums of money. He also traded duplicated stocks.

In 1991, he was sentenced to 5 years in jail for scams; according to him, it was "A way to fuck the system". In prison, he wrote a personal diary 'Gevangenis Boek' ('Prison Book'), which he later released.[10]

Formula One

He was the sponsor of a Formula One team in 1989, Moneytron Onyx, which placed 10th of the 21 teams. The biggest success he got with this was 3rd place at the Grand Prix of Portugal with driver Stefan Johansson in 1989.[11]

ROSSEM

In 1991, Van Rossem founded his own libertarian protest party ROSSEM, according to many, to gain political immunity, because of his problems with the Belgian Court.[12] The name of the party stood for ‘Radicale Omvormers en Sociale Strijders voor een Eerlijker Maatschappij’ ('Radical Inverters and Social Warriors for a Fairer Society'). Under the slogans ‘Geen gezwijn, stem libertijn’[13]('No nonsense, vote libertine') & 'Geen gezeik iedereen Rijk' ('No nagging everybody rich'), ROSSEM got 3.2% of the votes, or 3 chairs in the Belgian Federal Parliament at the Parlemential elections of 24 November 1991.[14] Rossem himself seated in the Belgian Chamber of Representatives from November 1991 to May 1995 & the Flemish Parliament from January 1992 to May 1995.[15]

ROSSEM 2

In 2014 he went back to the elections with his party ROSSEM[16] but lost with only 0.3% of the votes for the Belgian Federal Parliament and 0.2% for the Flemish Parliament.[17]
