The Indian Maritime University (IMU) (Hindi: भारतीय समुद्री विश्वविद्यालय) is a Central University, that was established by an Act of the Indian Parliament namely the Indian Maritime University Act 2008, on 14 November 2008. It is the only university in the country imparting quality education in the maritime field. It has an All-India jurisdiction and the headquarters is at Chennai. It has campuses at Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai, Visakhapatnam and Cochin.[2][3] The Indian Maritime University, came into being through an Act of Parliament (Act 22) on 14th November 2008 as a Central University and is poised to play a key role in the development of trained human resource for the maritime sector. 14th November is celebrated as 'IMU Day' every year. The following are the objectives of the University:

Legacies of Indian Maritime University

IMU is in the category of Professional University intended for fulfilling the requirements of the Maritime Sector. Ability to establish and develop a critical mass of activities in the maritime sector is the primary advantage of the IMU system .All activities need not be in a single location but should be distributed across different locations in the country, which have the comparative advantages to facilitate the best possible education and training in a given area of specialization.The Structure and content of the programmes leading to different levels of qualification of the personnel engaged in the maritime sector can be uniquely addressed by the IMU unconstrained by the limitations of the general purpose universities. The up-gradation of courses, revision of syllabi, introduction of new courses, adoption of new methods of technology - enabled learning, including regular class room instruction, virtual classes, distance learning etc., will be facilitated by the University system. The regulations governing the programmes for various qualifications can be customized to meet the particular needs of the industry and the international organizations. Similarly the University can develop its own transparent admission policy for its programmes to cater to the profiles of the beneficiaries serving the maritime industry. Governance

The Governance system of the IMU will be similar to the Central Universities and the Institutions of National Importance, fulfilling the requirements of the University Grants Commission for recognition as a University for the award of the degrees. It will have the autonomy and flexibility to carry out its mandates with the approval and the consent of the designated bodies or persons of the University and the Central Government. The Board of Management of the IMU will be the apex body for evolving policies and decisions on the functioning of the University. In evolving directions for its programmes and functions, the University will have the benefit of experiences available in a substantial number of institutions around the world engaged in education and training relating to the maritime sector.

Chennai Campus

The academy was established in 1985 with the technical assistance from UNDP/ UNCTAD to offer courses of reputable standards. Indian Maritime University - Chennai Campus, previously known as National Maritime Academy campus is located on a 20-acre scenic beachfront property on the outskirts of Chennai, a bustling cosmopolitan city. A 25 km drive along the East Coast Road hugging the coastline takes on to the exquisitely designed edifice, an architectural marvel, set amidst lush green sylvan surroundings. The sprawling campus houses the academic block, hostel, residential and recreational facilities. It is credited with ISO 9001:2000 Certification and accredited as grade 1 rating by ICRA. It has modern facilities to conduct training programmes for both port and marine personnel. The academic infrastructure includes 23 class rooms (out of which 11 class rooms are air conditioned) equipped with audio visual aid. For training the deck personnel, the campus has a state-of-the-art Ship Maneuvering Simulator having the capability to generate images of various types of ships and port approaches in diverse operational and climatic conditions. Engine room personnel get trained on Engine-room Simulator capable of creating different types of faults and emergencies. Students get hands-on training in the fully equipped machine shop and workshops for plumbing, electrical, pneumatic, fitting, hydraulics etc. Laboratories for Chemistry, Physics & Navigation are available for training students. A computer lab with internet connectivity exposes students to various computer applications. It has one of the best maritime libraries in the country with more than 8,000 books, journals and magazines in the maritime sector to augment the academic studies of the students / participants. The Audio Visual division produces video films for training and marketing. It has an archive of over 600 titles on DVDs covering a gamut of marine and port operations. Kochi Campus

Kerala has been the Maritime gateway to South India with a very long coast line. Kochi the queen of Arabian Sea placed along this coast line has always kept its doors open to the maritime industry. Kochi Port, an all-weather port, is most strategically located on the east west trade route. No other Indian port enjoys this proximity to the maritime highway as Kochi port. All these factors fuelled the growth of Kochi as a maritime hub. The port city of Kochi with its rich maritime background promises great potential for establishment of Maritime institutions offering specialized maritime courses and training. It was felt that establishment of a Campus of the IMU at Kochi will go a long way in promotion of the maritime sector in particular and the economy of the country as a whole, and the coastal region in particular. The LNG Petronet Project and the Container Terminal Project at Vallarpadam would also be immensely benefited in terms of manpower training from the IMU Kochi Campus. To begin with, IMU Centre at Kochi was opened with the objective of developing it later on into a full-fledged Campus. The Kochi Port Trust offered its Training Centre Complex for operating the IMU Centre at Kochi. Other facilities like workshop, fire station, Kochi Port Trust Hospital, etc., have been made available by the Kochi Port Trust for training purposes to the IMU. Kochi centre was incepted, and the DNS course inaugurated on August 22nd 2009 under the auspices of Dr. Christy Fernandez, Principal Secretary to the President of India. The Bhoomi Pooja for establishment of the Kochi Campus of the University was held at IMU site at Bristow Road, Willingdon Island, Kochi on Monday, the 25th January 2010 when Shri. K. Mohandas,I.A.S., Secretary, Ministry of Shipping, laid the foundation stone. On August 1 2010, new academic programs were inaugurated by Shri.T.K.A.Nair, Principal Secretary to Hon Prime Minister. The inauguration was also graced by other dignitaries Shri. K. Mohandas, I.A.S., Secretary, Ministry of Shipping; Shri N.Ramachandran, Chairman, Kochi Port Trust and Dr. Jose Paul, Former Chairman, Goa Port Trust.

Kolkata Campus

The Indian Maritime University - Kolkata Campus comprises two premier institutions- the Marine Engineering & Research Institute (MERI, Kolkata) and the Indian Institute of Port Management (IIPM, Kolkata).

Mumbai Campus

Indian Maritime University, Mumbai Campus with Head Office at Nerul, Navi, Mumbai consists of three institutes namely, Training Ship Chanakya, LBS College of Advanced Maritime Studies & Research and Marine Engineering and Research Institute, Mumbai. T.S. Chanakya is the shore based successor to the Training Ship Rajendra and the grand old lady of Indian Shipping, Training Ship Dufferin, where the training of Merchant Navy Officers in India started in the year 1927. Training on T.S. Dufferin and subsequently T.S. Rajendra continued till the year 1993, when it was replaced by Training Ship Chanakya. It is the first pre-sea training institution in India. Originally, it was under the Directorate General of Shipping, Mumbai in the Ministry of Shipping. LBS CAMSAR is a premier post-sea Maritime Education and Training Institution offering a comprehensive range of courses for Merchant Navy personnel. LBS CAMSAR was founded in October 1948 under the recommendations of the Merchant Navy Training Committee as Central Government premier post sea training institute for merchant Navy officers of Navigation & Engineering for giving skilled technical instructions to the Merchant Navy officers of Navigation and Engineering Department for Certificate of Competency. Named as 'Lal Bahadur Shastri Nautical & Engineering College' as a token of gratitude to former Prime Minister Late Shri. Lal Bahadur Shastri for making the present site available. Renamed as Lal Bahadur College of Advanced Maritime Studies & Research in 1994. It is the only institution in the world offering Extra Masters and Extra First Class Engineering courses, the highest programmes in the field of Nautical Science and Marine Engineering respectively. Marine Engineering & Research Institute, formerly known as Directorate of Marine Engineering Training (D.M.E.T.) was established by the Govt. of India in the year 1949 with its head office in Kolkata and branch office in Mumbai to train marine engineers. D.M.E.T. was renamed Marine Engineering and Research Institute in the year 1995. Marine Engineering and Research Institute (MERI), Mumbai is not only a pioneer Maritime Training Institute in India but in the whole of South East Asia. This is the only institution in India offering B.Sc. (Maritime Science) degree course, giving dual certification of Nautical & Engineering stream for employment on board the Merchant Navy ships.

Visakhapatnam Campus

Indian Maritime University - Visakhapatnam Campus was previously known as NSDRC. The IMU Visakhapatnam Campus emerges from the confluence of the centrally established Indian Maritime University at Chennai, and India's premier ship design and maritime research institution, the National Ship Design and Research Centre. IMU Visakhapatnam Campus heralds the integration of visionary academic insight with the accumulated professional expertise and knowledge base on Ship Design and Maritime Technology. Presently Visakhapatnam Campus is located in the former NSDRC Office and residential complex on a 5-acre property located on the main road connecting Naval Base and Scindia junction (Hindustan Shipyard) on one side and HPCL and Visakhapatnam Steel Plant on the other side. The office is having Main Building Complex consisting of 3 floors with centralized A/C situated in a plinth area of about 4140 Sq.m, consisting of Seminar Hall and Canteen. In addition, it has residential accommodation for officers and staff.

Admissions

Admissions to the B.Tech programmes was made through the prestigious IIT JEE, conducted by the Indian Institutes of Technology till 2012 and the admissions for MBA programmes was made earlier through CAT/CMAT/MAT etc. Now IMU conducts its own entrance namely All India Common Entrance Test (CET). School of Maritime Management

Indian Maritime University (School of Maritime Management) offers two M.B.A. Programmes, namely M.B.A. in Port and Shipping Management and M.B.A. in International Transportation and Logistics Management. The duration of the MBA programme is two academic years consisting of four semesters. Each academic year shall be divided into two semesters. The odd semester is scheduled from August to January of each academic year and the even semesters from February to July of each academic year. There shall be not less than 90 working days for each semester. Both the programmes has placements close to 100%.

School of Marine Engineering

The Marine Engineer was born the day the French inventor Deni’s Papin constructed a steam boat powered by his steam engine in 1704. Since then, from steam to diesel engines to automate and computer controlled machineries, the role of an Engineer is constantly changing with new challenges being regularly thrown up. The university is committed to provide systematic, contemporary training aimed at customer satisfaction. School of Marine Engineering offers the following courses

School of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering

This School runs both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes orienting the students for design and construction of marine crafts and structures. The graduates will find employment in shipping, shipbuilding, ocean engineering industries, Indian Navy, DRDO and Classification Societies etc. and also will be able to go for higher academic achievements in institutions of higher learning.
