The Indian Institute of Management Ranchi (Hindi: भारतीय प्रबंध संस्थान, राँची), abbreviated IIM Ranchi or IIM Ran, is a public business school located in Ranchi, Jharkhand, India. It is the ninth Indian Institute of Management to be established after IIM Ahemadabad, IIM Banglore, IIM Calcutta, IIM Lucknow, IIM Kozhikode, IIM Indore, IIM Shillong and IIM Rohtak . It was inaugurated on 6 July 2010. [1]

History

The 11th Five-Year Plan, endorsed by the National Development Council in December 2007, envisaged the establishment of seven new IIMs.

IIM Ranchi, like all IIMs, is an autonomous institution under the Ministry of Human Resources Development, government of India. The institute is free to design its own curriculum and recruit faculty members. In April 2011, Union Minister Kapil Sibal announced that the government is mulling enhancement of the autonomy of IIMs by allowing them to select the director and the chairman of Board of Directors.

IIM Ranchi is amongst the six new IIMs that were approved by the Union Cabinet on 27 August 2009. Prof. M. J. Xavier is the founding director of the institute.

Campus

This college operates from a temporary campus in Suchana Bhavan, behind the Governor House premises in the heart of Ranchi.[2] The construction of a permanent campus has begun at Birhar village on the Khunti-Karra road, about 35 kilometres (22 mi) from Ranchi.In July 2013,Jharkhand government allotted 90.14 acres (36.48 ha) of land free of cost to IIM Ranchi (IIM-R) at Cheri in Kanke block, 20 km from Ranchi.[3] On 29 July 2013, the Union Minister of Human Resource Development Shri Pallam Raju laid the foundation stone of IIM-Ranchi at Cheri.[4]

Programmes

Like other IIMs, IIM Ranchi awards only diplomas, and not degrees.[5] The programmes offered are post graduate programmes at a level equivalent to MBA and PhD and include a standard post graduate diploma in management (PGDM), human resource management (PGDHRM), a full-time doctoral programme (FPM) and a part-time executive program (PGEXP).[6] The two-year Post-graduate Diploma in Management, equivalent to an MBA, is the flagship education program which aims to prepare young graduates for senior-level positions in industry. Its Fellow Programme in Management is a four- five year fully residential doctoral-level programme in which students are trained to join academia, corporate consulting or management research on graduation. The institute's Executive Management Education Programmes and shorter programmes like Management Development are meant for enhancing the management potential of working professionals. IIM Ranchi became the first and only IIM in the country to offer PGDM-HR.[7]

Colloquium Colloquium is an annual series of guest lectures, where students of IIM Ranchi get an opportunity to interact with the industry leaders in finance, marketing, operations and HR. [8]

Inauguration of HR Conclave

HR Conclave IIM Ranchi being the only IIM to offer specialised course in Human Resource Management, have organised two HR conclaves themed as "Turning the tide on unrest in workforce "great in 2012 and "Holistic Development of Hu¬man Capital" in 2011, leaders across industry discussed the challenges faced by organizations and the role of HR managers in solving those challenges. Dignitaries like K.A. Narayan, President-HR, Raymond, Mr. Sandeep Choudhary, Partner, Aon Hewitt, Mr. Partha Dasgupta, CEO, Apogee Leads, Mr. R. Sridhar, Vice President-HR, ITC Limited any many others discussed about HR practices.[9]

Admissions

Admission to courses at IIM Ranchi is done based upon merit in Common Admission Test, conducted by the IIMs.[10]

Faculty

The PGP course is delivered by the faculty of IIM Calcutta. Faculty members fly from Kolkata to Ranchi and alter between teaching at these two IIMs.

The clubs and the committees on campus cover interests from finance and marketing to literature, theatre and nature, going beyond the confines of the classroom and the curriculum.

The clubs organize events and workshops throughout the year. Clubs include Hire- The HR Club, Finesse – the finance club, Marquess Club – the marketing enthusiasts, E-Cell - The Entrepreneurship Club, Conundrum - The Consulting Club,Samarpan - the Social Responsibility Club, Sankriya - Operations/Strategy Club and QR Code - the quizzing club.

TEDxIIMRanchi, which aims at spreading new ideas and accomplishing identified goals, is in now its fifth year. The first year theme was "Catalyzing Change" (2012), the second year theme "Dream Dare Do", (2013), and the third year theme, "Beyond Conformity" (2014). The TEDx (x=independently organised TED event) was created in the spirit of TED’s mission, "Ideas worth Spreading." The program is designed to give communities, organizations and individuals the opportunity to stimulate dialogue through TED-like experiences at the local level. [11][12]
