The Howard of Effingham School is an academy school for boys and girls aged 11–18.
Admissions
It is located in Effingham, near Leatherhead in Surrey, England. There are around 1500 students on roll.[1]
The school holds the following awards: Artsmark Gold (2002); Sportsmark Gold; Investor in People status; DfES achievement award (2002).[2] The Howard of Effingham school achieved an outstanding rating from the Ofsted report.[3]
It is east of the village of Effingham, next to the sports centre, accessed from the A246, the Guildford to Leatherhead road, and is west of Leatherhead and Fetcham. The school is overseen by the Howard Partnership, who also run Thomas Knyvett College in Twickenham. The Howard Of Effingham also leads the Effingham Learning partnership with the local Primary schools.
History
The school first opened in 1940 and since then has expanded to include a community sports centre, a purpose-built sixth form block and new specialist science facilities which were built after the school was designated as a science college. The name of the school comes from the Earl of Effingham family, and the Second Lord Howard of Effingham (Charles Howard, 1st Earl of Nottingham) who commanded the HMS Ark Royal (1587). The school was originally build for 240 pupils but over the years has expanded to hold 1500.
It became a specialist school in 2002. However lost this status when specialist school status was removed to all schools by the Coalition in 2010.
On 5 May 2012, Howard of Effingham's year 8 boys Rugby Union team won the Daily Telegraph Emerging Schools National Tournament. They played at the half time interval between the Army and Navy at Twickenham Rugby Stadium where they ran out easy winners and claimed the best year 8 schools rugby team 2012.[4][5][6]
In May 2012, Howard of Effingham's year 7 boys Rugby League team beat St Cuthberts (St Helens) 20-10 in the National Champions Schools semi-final in Leeds to book a place at Wembley stadium on August 25, 2012 in the Final which was against Castleford High School (Wakefield) and was played before the 2012 Carnegie Challenge Cup final. Howard of Effingham won 24-22 and claimed the title of "Years 7 Schools Rugby League Champions of the UK".
