Henry Ford College (HFC) is a public two-year college located in Dearborn, Michigan in Metro Detroit. The school, established in 1938,[2] is accredited by North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and the Michigan Commission on College Accreditation. The school was originally named Fordson Junior College when it was established in 1938. Later the college was adopted as Dearborn Junior College in 1946, before adopting the name Henry Ford Community College (HFCC) in 1952, which was named after the Henry Ford Trade School which closed and its assets were transferred to the Dearborn School Board of Education. The name was shortened to Henry Ford College in 2014.[5] The college has multiple nicknames, including "Hank High" and "Harvard on the Rouge."

Degrees

HFC offers Associate Degrees and certificate programs in a wide variety of liberal arts, science, fine arts, culinary arts and health science disciplines. The college also has a Center for Lifelong Learning which offers non-credit courses for personal enrichment or professional development. Other offerings include an Honors Program, a chapter of Phi Theta Kappa (Alpha Xi Mu chapter) and the radio station WHFR 89.3 FM. It also holds discipline-specific accreditations for its many health science programs.

Online Classes

In addition to courses held on campus, HFC offers to students a choice in over 100 online courses, as well as hybrid courses, which split classroom time with online instruction. These courses provide a high quality educational experience, as well as convenience, for students that cannot, or do not wish to, commute to campus. Additionally, some degree programs can be completed online.

Skilled Trades and Apprenticeship

The Skilled Trades and Apprenticeship Division offers training programs for people employed in skilled industrial occupations (primarily the apprenticeable skilled trades) and for people interested in entry into skilled trades occupations. Established in cooperation with industry, these programs provide theoretical and practical knowledge and the competencies required to supplement on-the-job training. Programs may vary from a single course that quickly provides specific knowledge and skills to a complete curriculum that provides comprehensive related instruction. Because the programs are employer-based, the Division operates on a plan of three consecutive 15-week semesters in fall, winter, and spring/summer to provide year round instruction. The Division offers a variety of curricula for apprenticeable and similarly skilled industrial occupations. Each major curriculum consists of developmental, apprenticeship foundation and trade-specific foundation courses. Although generic trade-specific curricula are available for approximately 40 major industrial trade classifications, each sponsoring company can modify the curricula to meet its specific training needs.

Transferring/graduating

HFC guarantees that credits earned at their institution will be fully accepted in transfer to four-year colleges. The college also guarantees to refund all tuition increases to any student who graduates within four years of starting a program.[6]

Athletics

Henry Ford has several intercollegiate sports teams, including men's baseball, basketball and golf and women's basketball, softball and volleyball. The school also has a selection of seventeen intramural teams.[3][4]

Financial support

As a public institution, the school gets support from several sources: state appropriations, student tuition and fees, local Dearborn School District property taxes, auxiliary activities, and both state and local grants.[2]

Enrollment

In Fall 2007 academic year, Henry Ford enrolled more than 14,000 students[1] and had 741 employees, 175 of which being full time.[2]

Campuses

Henry Ford offers classes on two campuses situated in Dearborn, Michigan. HFC's Main Campus is located on the southwest corner of Ford Road and Evergreen, just north of the University of Michigan-Dearborn campus. The newest campus, East Campus, is home to two buildings- HFC's "Michigan Technical Education Center" (M-TEC) and the new state-of-the-art Nursing building. East Campus is located on Schaefer Road just north of Rotunda.
