Hassett

Hassett is an Irish surname

Ó' hAiseadha in Gaelic, the Hassetts were an old Thomond family whose original homeland was in the barony of Bunratty, Co. Clare. A branch of Clancullen. They were one of the septs that fought in alliance with their kinsmen the MacNamaras in the battle of abbey 1317.

The first English language records rendered the name as O'Hessedy or O'Hassia. The 1659 'census' found it to be one of the principle names of Bunratty and recorded it as O'Hashea. The modern form made its appearance just a little later, in the Money Heath Rolls of Co. Tipperary of 1665 - 1667.
