Early life

Guy Montagu George Finch-Hatton was born on May 28, 1885. He was the son of Henry Finch-Hatton (1852–1927) and Anne Jane Codrington,[1] (died 20 June 1924), daughter of Admiral Sir Henry Codrington and Helen Jane Smith. Together, his parents had: (1) Gladys Margaret Finch-Hatton (1882-1964),[2] (2) Guy Montagu George Finch-Hatton (1885-1939); and (3) Denys Finch Hatton (1887–1931), big-game hunter

Finch-Hatton's father, the 13th Earl of Winchilsea was the second son of George Finch-Hatton (1791–1858), the 10th Earl of Winchilsea, and his third wife Frances Margaretta Rice (1820–1909). His maternal grandparents were Edward Royd Rice (1790–1878), British MP for Dover (1847–1857), and Elizabeth Knight (1800–1884).

In 1927, Finch-Hatton acceded to the title upon the death of his father, Henry Finch-Hatton, the 13th Earl of Winchilsea.

Personal life

On 8 June 1910, he married Margaretta Armstrong Drexel (1885-1952), the daughter of Margarita Armstrong (1867-1948),[3] and Anthony Joseph Drexel Jr. (1864-1934), and the granddaughter of Anthony Joseph Drexel (1826-1893), a member of the wealthy Philadelphia banking dynasty. Margaretta's parents divorced in 1917, and in 1918 Margarita married Brinsley FitzGerald (1859-1931), the son of Peter FitzGerald, 1st Baronet of Valencia (1808-1880). Finch-Hatton and his wife had three children:

  1. Christopher Finch-Hatton, 15th Earl of Winchilsea (1911–1950), who married Countess Gladys Széchényi Sárvár-Felsövidék, daughter of Count László Széchényi Sárvár-Felsövidék (1879-1938), of the Széchényi family, and Gladys Vanderbilt (1886-1965),[4] a member of the Vanderbilt family
  2. Lady Daphne Margarita Finch-Hatton (1913-2003), who married Whitney Straight (1912–1979),[5] a member of the Whitney family[6]
  3. Lady Henrietta Diana Juanita Finch-Hatton (1917-1977),[2] who married Peter Frank Tiarks (1910-1975)[7]

Finch-Hatton died in London in 1939 at the age of 53.[2]
