Dedi Mulyadi

Dedi Mulyadi, (born in Sukasari Village, Dawuan District, Subang, on 11 April 1971) is an Indonesian politician. At age 37 in 2008 he began serving as Purwakarta's Regent. [1]

Personal life


He is the youngest of nine children. His father, Sahlin Ahmad Suryana is a retired Army soldier young cadre who retired at 28 years old due to the effects by toxins while serving in the Dutch army. His mother, Karsiti was an Indonesian Red Cross activist.

He failed first grade. He had to travel 20 km to reach his middle school by bicycle bought from his own savings. He early showed a talent for speaking, preaching, and poetry which gave him victory in competitions. In high school he worked part-time jobs. After he graduated from High school he moved to Purwakarta and continued his studies.[1] He continued his education at Sekolah Tinggi Hukum Purnawarman Purwakarta and achieve his law degree (1999).

Mulyadi is married to Anne Ratna Mustika (Former Miss Purwakarta). They have 2 children, Maulana Akbar Ahmad Habibie and Yudistira Manunggaling Rahmaning Hurip.[1]

Political career

Dedi Mulyadi was Chairman of HMI Purwakarta, STH Purnawarman Purwakarta Student Senate (1994), Vice Chairman of DPC FSPSI (1997), Secretary of PP SPTSK KSPSI (1998), Vice Chairman of GM FKPPI (2002), Chairman of PC Pemuda Muslimin Indonesia (2002), Secretary of KAHMI Purwakarta (2002), Chairman of Purwakarta Scout (2005-2015) and Chairman of Purwakarta Golkar Party (2004-2007).

Mulyadi's professional political career began when he was elected as Purwakarta Regional Parliament in 1999-2004 period and served as Chairman of the E Commission. But in 2003, he was elected as Vice Reagant of Purwakarta in 2003-2008 period.

He served as Purwakarta's Vice Regent (2003-2008). In 2008, he ran for Purwakarta Regent and became first Purwakarta Regent directly elected by the people. In 2013 he was re-elected.[1]

FPI opposition

In 2015 and 2016, Islamic Defenders Front (FPI), a radical-religious Islamist group, has launched several hate crimes, raids and attack against Dedi Mulyadi administration in Purwakarta. FPI accusing the Regent of Purwakarta as a musyrik (polytheist) after he put up statues of Sundanese puppet characters in a number of city parks throughout Purwakarta in West Java. The FPI also has accused Dedi of debasing Islamic tenets by using the Sundanese greeting Sampurasun, instead of the Muslim-approved Assalamualaikum. In December 2015 around a hundred FPI members has done sweeping against the Purwakarta Regent. FPI members inspected cars passing through the front gate of Taman Ismail Marzuki (TIM) in Central Jakarta where the Indonesia Theater Federation Award was being held, and trying to stop Purwakarta regent Dedi Mulyadi from attending the event.[2]
