Debatable is a BBC quiz show that has aired on BBC Two since 22 August 2016 and is hosted by Patrick Kielty.

Background

Debatable was commissioned for 20 30-minute episodes and five 45-minute episodes, as was Make Me an Egghead[1] which premiered the same day: Debatable at 6pm, Make Me an Egghead at 6:30pm.[2] The first series ended on 25 September;[3] episode 20 was scheduled to air 16 September but fell foul of overrunning tennis.[4]

Format

One contestant and three celebrities play the game.[5] The celebrities across the series included rapper and poet Akala, TV personality Christopher Biggins, TV presenter Jennie Bond, former Newsreader Michael Buerk, TV presenter Angellica Bell, comedian Susan Calman, actor and comedian Liz Carr, TV presenter Rick Edwards, actor Nigel Havers, TV presenter Konnie Huq, columnist Rachel Johnson, TV presenter Gethin Jones, dragon Peter Jones, comedian Russell Kane, weather presenter Carol Kirkwood, BBC Radio 1 presenter Alice Levine, broadcaster Angela Rippon, actress Sunetra Sarker, broadcaster June Sarpong, cricketer and TV presenter Phil Tufnell, BBC Sport and Breakfast presenter Dan Walker and former MP Ann Widdecombe.[6]

In the thirty minute episodes, two questions are asked in the first three rounds;[5] in the forty five minute episodes, three are asked.[7]

Round 1

Kielty runs a question with four possible answers past the contestant, sends it over to the team for discussion, and then asks the contestant for a final decision. Questions in this round are worth £200 each.[5]

Round 2

Round 2 is a picture round, where the contestant is faced with three pictures. Sh/He has to put them in order. Again, Kielty will ask the contestant, he will then ask the celebrities and he will then ask the contestant again and must have an answer. £300 is earned for each correct order.[5]

Round 3

Round 3 is a "Which of the following is true about", and features three options. The contestant must pick one after having listened to the celebrities. Correct answers are worth £500.[5]

Round 4

For the final round, things change slightly. The contestant picks one celebrity, and between them they pick a category and are given 45 seconds to find three correct answers out of six. If the correct three answers are given, the contestant walks away with all the money (s)he's won in the game, up to £2,000. If there is one or more wrong answer, the contestant leaves with nothing.[5]
