David Donaldson MacKinnon (born 23 May 1956 in Glasgow) is a Scottish former professional football player who is best known for his time with Rangers.
Football career
Mackinnon started his career at Arsenal before joining Dundee in 1976. A transfer to Partick Thistle for £18,000 followed in 1978.
With Thistle he earned a Scottish League cap against Northern Ireland in 1980 under Jock Stein. Later that year though he was diagnosed with Tuberculosis and had a kidney removed. With doubts over his career he returned to the side in January 1981 in a Scottish Cup tie against Clyde and over the remaining season he recovered full fitness.
He joined Rangers from Partick Thistle for £30,000 in May 1982. MacKinnon made his top team debut against Motherwell on the 4 September 1982, aged 26. The game ended in as a 2–2 draw[2]
The book, ‘Rangers – Player by Player’ (written by Bob Ferrier and Robert McElroy) said of MacKinnon; “Dave was a wholehearted full-back who had pace and was addicted to storming forward to use a powerful shot.” MacKinnon departed Ibrox after the arrival of Graeme Souness, moving to Airdrieonians in 1986. He scored the Division 2 promotion clinching penalty kick for Kilmarnock against Cowdenbeath on the final day of the 1989–90 season.
Post-playing career
After retirement he became general manager at Kilmarnock and chief executive at Dundee. MacKinnon was also a reporter for Sportsound on BBC Radio Scotland during the late 1990s. In 2014 Mackinnon became Media and Communications Director at Hamilton Academical and is also co presenter at Eklipse Sports radio.
