The DHA Suffa University, or DSU, is a private research university located in the midst of DHA neighborhood of Karachi, Sindh, Pakistan.[5]

The university was established in 2002 and started operations in 2012. The university offers undergraduate, post-graduate, and doctoral programmes in engineering, humanities, arts, computer science, business, management, and other academic disciplines.[6] Major financial funding and endowment are managed by the DHA urban development corporation who also built the university.[6]

History

DHA Suffa University was granted its charter by the government of Sindh in 2002. The university derives its name from the rectangular platform in Al-Masjid an-Nabawi, where companions of Prophet Muhammad used to gather to seek knowledge. The construction of the present campus on 5 acres of land in DHA Phase VII (Ext) was started in 2004 and completed in 2007. The capacity of the campus is 3000 students.[7]

It is the first university of the country to engage in rocket science, developing Raheel-1,[8] a hybrid rocket engine producing 1 kN of thrust using paraffin wax and liquid oxygen.[9] Moreover, in 2016, it became the first university in Pakistan to have won at all the major aircraft design, build and fly competitions in a year, chronologically Airex in December 2015 and AIAA Design Build and Fly Contest 2016 both at Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology and Propellair 2016 at NED University of Engineering and Technology. In October, the Hybrid Rocket Engine project won the first place and Solar Powered Airplane won the second place at national university projects copetion Science Fair 2016 organized by SUPARCO, part of the World Space Week. The university was one of the three teams from Pakistan to participate in AIAA's Design Build and Fly Contest 2016 at Wichita, Kansas. All of these achievements are due to Mechanical Engineering Department's Dr. Bilal Siddiqui (holding degrees in Mechanical, Aerospace and Control Engineering), who was also the pioneering faculty advisor of the university's Formula Student Racing team Burraq.[10] In 2016, Defence Housing Authority, Karachi's Administrator, Brig. Zubair Ahmed awarded Dr. Bilal's research.[11] His research lab is located at GF-053, main campus.[12]

In the Electrical Engineering Department, undergraduate student Amar Bhatti has been bringing laurels to the university in almost all robotics contests in the country.[13] Similarly, the Computer Science department has also won various programming and software competitions in the country. The department is headed by Dr. Tafseer Ahmed, a renowned researcher in Urdu Natural Language Processing.

The university also has various student and research exchange agreements with other universities in Europe and Asia,[14][15][16]
