Cooper's Square

Coopers Square is an indoor shopping centre located in Burton upon Trent, Staffordshire, England. It is owned by the Grosvenor Group.^[1]

Formerly called Burton Shopping Centre; the site was opened in 1970 by HRH Princess Alexandra.

The total retail area for the shopping centre is 35,766 m² (385,000 sq ft).^[2]

The shopping centre has 800 car parking spaces, with a ground car park as well as a rooftop car park.^[3]

History

In 1996 Sainsbury's moved to a new unit that had been built across the road. The former unit was split up and became a BHS, JJB Sports, (now a Toys "R" Us) and the now defunct retailer, Au Naturale (discount store, Pound World, now occupies this unit.).^[4]

Malls

Cooper's Square consists of five 'malls'. These are:

• Underhill Walk
• Swan Walk
• St Modwens Walk
• Dame Paulet Walk
• Cooper's Square ^[5]

Prior to the 1994 redevelopment of the Cooper's Square, Dame Paulet Walk was formerly known as Fennel Walk. The Dame Paulet Almshouses occupied the site where Primark now stands; the originally doorway is installed into the side of the building. Also, the statue of the Burton Cooper stood in the entrance of Saint Modwens Walk on High Street and the rubbish bins resembled beer casks.

Proposed Extension

Planning applications were submitted in summer 2012, for a 110000 sq ft^[6] extension to the centre. If approved, the plans will see the centre extending into what is currently the car park, and also into the area occupied by shops on nearby Station Street (The Royal Bank of Scotland, A dry cleaners, two estate agents and a night club.), which will be demolished and subsequently rebuilt remodelled with a new facade.

Eleven new, two storey units are planned, as well as a new 55000 sq ft^[7] department store, (confirmed as Debenhams^[8]). There will be a new rooftop car park and the current ground-level car park will be refurbished and landscaped. There will also be a new car park entrance/exit on Union Street, and a new taxi rank on Station Street.

Overall the extension hopes to create 200 full-time and part-time jobs.^[9]
