Charles Burton Mitchel (September 19, 1815 – September 20, 1864) was an American politician who represented Arkansas in the United States Senate in 1861, and in the Confederate States Senate from 1861 until his death.

Biography

Mitchel was a senator from Arkansas; born in Gallatin, Tennessee, September 19, 1815; attended the common schools; graduated from the University of Nashville, in 1833 and from the Jefferson Medical College of Philadelphia, in 1836; removed to Washington, Arkansas, and practiced medicine for twenty-five years; member, State house of representatives 1848; receiver of public moneys 1853-1856; unsuccessful candidate for election in 1860 to 37th Congress; elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate and served from March 4, 1861, until July 11, 1861, when he was expelled for support of the rebellion; elected to the Confederate States Senate at the first session of the State legislature and served until his death in Little Rock, September 20, 1864; interment in Presbyterian Cemetery, Washington.
