Cathedral Catholic High School

Cathedral Catholic High School (CCHS) is a private coeducational Catholic college preparatory school in San Diego, California, USA. It is part of the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Diego and was founded as the University of San Diego High School in 1957. CCHS came into existence in 1999, and the school moved to its current location on Del Mar Heights Road in Carmel Valley and changed its name in August 2005. The greatschools rating for the school is 4 stars for 2011 and 2012.^[3] Cathedral Catholic was named in honor of the original Cathedral Girls High School, which merged with USDHS in 1970 to become the second co-educational Catholic high school in San Diego.

Admissions

Financial aid and scholarships

As part of Bishop Robert H. Brom's "Secondary Education Initiative", all students from Catholic schools are entitled to financial assistance. The annual cost to send a child to Cathedral Catholic is $16, 484 or 81% of the cost to send a child to one year of a private college including the $500 registration fee.^[4] The 2015 tuition fee was a $1,290 increase since the 2014 year. An additional $400 fee^[5][6] covers technology expenses and an iPad for educational use, and a $250 fee covers the use of the Learning Center. Scholarships are available in memory of notable alumni from USDHS. These scholarships are awarded to returning students based on academic, or artistic achievement, or through service.

Ethnicity

The ethnic makeup is mostly white, making up to 70% of the school population. The remaining students are 10% multi-racial, 10% Hispanic, 6% Asian, 1% black and 4% other.

Academics

AP Classes

CCHS offers Advanced Placement classes in art history, biology, calculus AB & BC, chemistry, English language, English literature, environmental science, European history, Macroeconomics, Physics B and C, Spanish language, studio art, US history, US government and World history.^[7] Advanced Placement examinations are offered at CCHS in May of each year. Taking the AP examination after the completion of a CCHS AP course is mandatory, otherwise the student will not receive the added point on their GPA.^[8]

Visual and performing arts

Visual and performing arts classes at CCHS include drama and advanced drama 1-2, multimedia authoring 1-2, CCTV broadcast and video journalism, journalism, photography, digital imaging, art 1-2, art 3-4, ceramics, introduction to guitar, choral music, concert and pep band, AP art history and AP studio art. After-school courses in band, journalism and Yearbook are also available.^[9]

Student life

Pastoral care and counseling

Schoolwide masses are held on various feasts and solemnities of the Church throughout the school year.^[10] In addition to the schoolwide liturgies, daily mass and lauds (or a morning prayer) are held each morning before school in the St. Therese Chapel on campus.^[11]

Facilities

Athletics

Cathedral Catholic has the following sports:

• Fall sports: cross country, field hockey, American football, women's tennis, women's golf, women's volleyball and men's water polo.
• Winter sports: men's basketball, women's basketball, men's and women's soccer, rugby, women's water polo, wrestling and surfing.
• Spring sports: badminton, baseball, men's golf, men's tennis, softball, swimming and diving, men's and women's lacrosse, track and field and men's volleyball.
• Non-seasonal sports include: sailing, cheerleading, rowing, fencing, equestrianism and dance team.

Cathedral Catholic is the home of the Dons.

Dons' football season 2011

The Cathedral Catholic Dons football team won its fifth consecutive CIF Division III title against the Olympian High School Eagles at Qualcomm Stadium on December 5, 2011. The Dons beat the Eagles 41-0. The Dons had a first round bye to meet the Lincoln Hornets and the Point Loma Pointers who they beat to make it to "The Q".

Dance team

The dance team first went to competition in February 2006 with its small lyrical team and was placed 15 out of 20. In 2007, they went to competition in January and February with a small lyrical team, medium jazz, large hip hop and three soloist division. Lyrical’s highest placement was 14th and with qualifying scores for regionals, medium jazz placed 16th, and hip hop placed 7th. In 2008, the dance team went to competition in solos, small lyrical and hip hop. They placed 12th in hip hop at regionals and qualified for nationals. The team attended regionals at USA Dance & Spirit Circuit and the regionals took place at Aliso Niguel HS, Glendale HS and San Pasqual HS.^[13]

There are usually about five dancers on the team. This is sport occurs all year and the year ends with a dance concert/recital in the spring displaying past work as well as new pieces created by the students and their coach.

Alumni Association

The CCHS/USDHS/CGHS Alumni Association was formed to encourage financial duty and a connection for alumni, past parents, and past faculty of the school. The Association is a link between the school and its members, supporting activities and supporting annual giving. Each member receives a copy of the alumni newsletter and special mailings to facilitate communication of events and information concerning graduates. The current alumni director is Lawrence Fitzgerald Jr., and the current president is Martin Correia (Class of 1987).^[14]
