Carlos Rosario International Public Charter School is a charter school for adults in Washington D.C..

History

Carlos Rosario Adult Education Center origins started in 1930's at Gordon Junior High at 35th and T Streets NW at in Burleith, Washington, D.C.,

In 1970 was founded the "Program of English Instruction for Latin Americans" (PEILA) and Marcelo Fernandez as its first. In 1972 Sonia Gutierrez is named director of PEILA. In 1978 PEILA merges with Gordon Junior High operated and Americanization School was merged with Program of English Instruction for Latin Americans (PEILA) forming the Gordon Center, this was the beginning of current school.

In 1992 the Gordon Center was renamed to Carlos Rosario Center in memoriam of Carlos Manuel Rosario, the school served until 1996 when had 1,600 students.

In 1996, the District of Columbia closed the Carlos Rosario Center due to a District-wide financial crisis that eliminated all DCPS adult education programs. Gutierrez raised enough money to open a small, private nonprofit program in Calvary Baptist Church in Chinatown.[1]

Sonia Gutierrez raise 150,000 working from her basement and reopened the center as private non+profit school and reopen the center 1997. In 1998 was get approval to be a Charter School, being the first charter school for adults in the United States.

In 1997, the Carlos Rosario International Career Center opened as a nonprofit organization under Sonia Gutierrez's leadership.[2] In 1998, Gutierrez won approval from the District of Columbia Public Charter School Board to establish the Carlos Rosario International Public Charter School [3] The school continued to grow and expand under Gutierrez's leadership. In 2013, the Carlos Rosario International Public Charter School opened the Sonia Gutierrez Campus,[4][5] a workforce development satellite site serving an additional 500 students located in the Eckington, Washington, D.C. neighborhood of Northeast Washington, D.C. The school won the E Pluribus Unum Award from the Migration Policy Institute.[6] With the opening of this second campus, the school now provides more than 2,500 students annually with comprehensive support services and courses including English as a Second Language, GED in Spanish and English, technology essentials, citizenship and career training.

In 2004 Carlos Rosario opens a new building at 1100 Harvard Street, Columbia Heights NW. In 2006 Carlos Rosario Career Center and Carlos Rosario Charter School merged to become Carlos Rosario International Public Carter School. In 2013 was inaugurated "Sonia Gutierrez campus", a workforce development school.

More than 2500 students attend to Carlos Rosario and more than 350 students are graduated from Carlos Rosario every year.[7] [8]The school has many extracurricular activities and volunteer opportunities.

Multi-lingual education

Carlos Rosario has a multi-lingual team that provides many services to help students address and overcome these barriers with information on Amharic, French, Spanish and Vietnamese.
