Boogat is the stage name of Daniel Russo Garrido, a Canadian musician from Montreal, Quebec.[1] Blending hip hop with Latin music styles such as cumbia and reggaeton, he won the Juno Award for World Music Album of the Year for his album Neo-Reconquista at the Juno Awards of 2016.[2]
Of Paraguayan and Mexican descent,[3] he was born in Montreal to immigrant parents who met as international students at Université Laval[4] and raised in the Verdun borough of the city.[5]
Performing initially in French, he released his debut album Triste et belles histoires in 2004.[1] He began rapping in Spanish after collaborating with the salsa group Roberto Lopez Project, and learning there was more of an audience for Spanish-language music in Quebec than he had realized.[5] He released his first Spanish-language EP Mala Fama in 2009, and his first full-length Spanish album El Dorado Sunset in 2011.[5] The album won a Prix Félix for Best World Music Album in 2013.[6]
Neo-Reconquista, which includes a collaboration with Pierre Kwenders, was released in 2015.[7]
