Beyblade (toy)

Beyblade is a brand name for a line of spinning top toys originally developed and manufactured by Takara Tomy, first released in 2000. The toys usually include a 'launcher' – a device for bringing the spinning top up to speed, with either a separate or integral rip-cord. This 'ripping' action causes the tops to be ejected, at the end of the movement. Players eject the tops into a plastic arena or into a pan with a slightly dished base, where they subsequently strike each other. The last top still spinning wins. Skill can be used in the deployment of the tops, which significantly influences the way they move around the arena, and subsequently interact. The different styles of device respond to collisions in different ways, so advantage might be gained from using a particular type of top against a particular opponent.

Both the toys and their name were inspired by "Beigoma", a traditional spinning top. The concept is similar to Battling Tops, a board game developed by Ideal Toy Company in 1968. The introduction of the toy corresponded with the broadcast of the Beyblade anime television series of the same name. In 2002, Hasbro began to sell Beyblade toys internationally (under license from, and produced by, Takara) along with a coordinated country-by-country rollout of localized versions of the TV series. The Beyblade toy line went on to be one of the most popular toy lines in the world from 2000 to 2005. In August 2008, Takara Tomy released a new generation of Beyblade with a metal outer layer; the first incarnation of the toy in three and a half years. from the Basic System through the Heavy/Hard Metal System, Beyblades were categorized as Attack, Defense, stamina, or balance Types, but when the Hybrid Wheel System was introduced, the Combination and Endurance Types were renamed as Balance and Stamina Types, respectively. These Beyblades may have pictures on them that symbolizes a creature (known as a Bit-Beast or the Face-Bolt ) which shows what the Beyblade does, or looks like. In Beyblade Metal Fusion, they have symbols on them that represent one of the 88 named constellations in space, while in the 4D series, beyblades are named after planets and constellations ex: Pegasus, medusa (in the original) and sagittario (real name Sagittarius).

Basic System

The "Basic System" tops are the first generation of Beyblade tops. They are made entirely of plastic, with the exception of Weight Disks and some tips. These Beyblades consist of four basic parts:

The first tops consisted of a four-layer part system: Bit Chip, Attack Ring, Weight Disk, and Blade Base; the Spin Gear would lock into the Blade Base, essentially making the top only four layers after initial construction. Upon the arrival of the S- and F-series Beyblades, Sub-Attack Rings were introduced that were removable and interchangeable, thus creating a five-layer system. The new version metal fusion has five parts: the face bolt, the energy ring, the fusion wheel, the spin track and the performance tip.

Magnacore System (MG)

Introduced with the V-series, the "Magnacore" line of Beyblade toys featured magnetic Spin Gears and Weight Disks to attract or repel blades from each other. Additionally, one could purchase magnets that were affixed to the bottom of one's Beystadium, which affected the movement patterns of the Beyblades.

Engine Gear System (EG)

Engine Gear tops were introduced with the G-series, and retain the same major design of a typical Beyblade, including a Bit Piece, an Attack Ring, a Weight Disk, and a Blade Base; Engine Gear tops, however, replace the typical Spin Gear with a more advanced Engine Gear, which affects the movement of the top during the battle. Each Engine Gear includes a Turbo Winder to wind-up the engine core. When in action, the Blade Base releases the Engine Gear determined by the Blade Base's clutch lock system. This series of beyblades were the last ones to be made of plastic parts with the exception of the weight disks. The later ones were semi metal or completely metal.

For the 2 GT Series Beyblades that were released, the Engine Gear that comes with them is intended for use with the Customizable Engine Weight of each top. The Engine Gears, however, can fit with the "Clutch" bases.

Hard/Heavy Metal System (HMS)

Beyblade HMS (Hard Metal System) is a line of Beyblade toys released after the Engine Gear line of blades in respect to the anime series. This series, unlike ones in the past, use smaller pieces made mostly of metal. HMS Beyblades have a distinct advantage over previously released Beyblades, that being that their spin velocities are 1.5-2× faster.[1]

These tops are composed of a four-layer part system:

HMS blades do not use Spin Gears or Engine Gears, nor do they require them since the blade can be launched from both spin directions. This is possible through the HMS Neo Dual Launcher, which allows such spin-changing. These beyblades were the last ones corresponding to the Original series. A few years later, a new show under the name Metal Fight Beyblade, (Beyblade: Metal Fusion in North America) with new characters and Beyblades made in the same scale as HMS Beyblades, but with a completely different structure, was introduced.

Hybrid Wheel System (HWS)

This system was released in 2008 in Japan and in 2010 worldwide. Hasbro calls the HWS the Performance Top System. It introduces new components making the Beyblades more complex including a wheel made of polycarbonate and more technically advanced bottoms. These kinds of Beyblades are part of Beyblade: Metal Fusion. All parts of an HWS beyblade are plastic except for the fusion wheel.

Names of Beyblades can now be determined by their parts. For example, Storm Pegasus 105RF has a 'Pegasus' Energy Ring/Clear Wheel, 'Storm' Fusion Wheel/Metal Wheel, '105(10.5mm)' Spin Track/Track, and a 'RF (Rubber Flat)' Bottom/Performance Tip.

Beyblade/Metal System (Pre-HWS)

Beyblades have 4 different parts (instead of 5 from the Hybrid Wheel System):

Extreme Top System (XTS)

Beyblade: XTS (Xtreme Top System) is a system of Beyblades by Hasbro released in Beyblade: Metal Masters. They have advanced top designs, light and sound effects, as well as being bigger and more aggressive than normal Beyblades. They are separated into four groups, "Tornado Battlers", "Electro Battlers", "IR Spin Control Beyblades", and ¨Stealth Battlers¨.

Tornado Battlers: These Beyblades are preassembled and taller than normal Beyblades and have a "tornado" design that enable them to battle more extreme, tilt, weave, and spin. Some can even escape Penalty Pockets in Stadiums. Electro Battlers: These Beyblades are preassembled, high intensity Beyblades packed with LED lights that create designs and read how the Beyblade is spinning as well as having battle sounds. IR Spin Control: These are Beyblades that are able to be controlled with a Launcher. It can give them a power boost, turn left or right, and activate sounds. Stealth Battlers: These Beyblades that are able to "fling" out weapons while battling, but they have low stamina once the weapons pop out.

4D System

4D system beyblades were introduced in March 2011. There are several differences between this and the HWS beyblades. Firstly, the metal wheel of this series is divided into multiple parts. Second, the clear wheels are made of a heavier, stronger material.[2] Third, it uses a piece that is a fusion of the track and bottom, known as the 4D Bottom. An example is Big Bang Pegasis F:D. F:D stands for Final Drive, the name of the part.

PC Frame – Exclusive to a few beyblades, is a layer that sits on the Metal Frame and Core. It is made of Polycarbonate plastic. The speculation for it describes it as a shock absorber to deliver Upper Attack. The strength of Metal causes extreme recoil, so the PC Frame will prevent destabilisation.[3]

Metal Frame – Primarily just a Metal Wheel, except, it is more of an "outline" to the core, since it has a big hole to sit on top of the core, aligning it in place. It may be flipped for a mode change.[4]

Core – Supplies the holes and indents for the Track to be placed under and Clear Wheel and Metal Frame to sit on top. It has support parts for an extra add on.

4D Performance Tip – The 4D Performance Tip usually has 2–3 tips fused into one. There are five beyblades with 4 D performance tips. They are 5 4d performance tips. Two use centrifugal force,one uses a bearing, two can be rotated manually to change modes.They often work well.

However, with L-Drago-Destructor, which is left-spinning,does not contain a 4D Clear Wheel. Its 4D Fusion wheel, which only has 2 parts with a 4D tip. (Metal Frame and core). The Metal frame is entirely made of metal. The core is rubber, which can steal spin. Though, the metal frame resembles older L-Drago Energy rings.

Takara Tomy has released Metal faces which work with HWS and 4D beyblades. Metal Faces make the beyblades heavier.

The main HWS system is this: Face bolt: A screw which holds the bey together Clear wheel: A plastic ring which provides a hold for launchers. some aerodynamics are involved. Also known as an energy ring outside of Asia. Metal wheel: The Fusion wheel has points to connect the energy ring to they bey. This part is made of metal and is the main point of contact in battle. It also provides the necessary weight to the top. Track: The track (also known as spin track) is the part of the bey which connects to the face and helps to hold the top together. It also defines the height of the top. Tip: The tip will change the spin patterns of the top as well as its stamina in battle. Flatter tips will cause beys to behave more aggressively, while pointed ones create a stable, calm spin pattern.

The Spark FX system

The Spark FX system is supposed to make the Beyblade: Metal Fury tops look more original, compared to the original Takara Tomy Beyblades. Also the Beyblades have multicolored Energy Rings so when they spin, a new color appears when it is two. When it is used with the Beys, the face bolt may shine or produce some kind of different colored lights. The Spark FX Beys feature mainly Hyperblades. The Spark FX phrase is a pun on the words "Spark Effects". They are recolors of what Takara Tomy calls 4D.

Popular Beyblades

The popularity of a beyblade depends on its performance in the animé. Pegasus, Nemesis and L-Drago are the most popular beyblades in the world. In the animé, Pegasus is 'The Legendary Bey' owned by Gingka, the main character. Nemesis is 'The God of Destruction' and the main villain. L-Drago is 'The Forbidden Bey' owned by Ryuga who is villainous at first but then becomes good. Other popular beyblades are Leone, Eagle, Sagittario, Libra, Bull, Serpent, Striker, Zurafa, Destroyer, Kerbecs, Tempo, Lynx, Kronos, Jupiter, VariAres, Orion, Quetzalcoatl etc. Pegasus is the most popular beyblade in the world. There are five Pegasus beyblades: Storm Pegasus, Galaxy Pegasus, Cosmic(Big Bang) Pegasus, Samurai Pegasus and Wing Pegasis. Wing Pegasis is not seen in the animé and so it is not very popular. But in real life, it is stronger than all the other Pegasus beyblades. Cosmic Pegasus and Samurai Pegasus are extremely strong in the animé but in real life, they are 'useless'. All Pegasus beyblades are attack type. Nemesis is the second most popular beyblade. There are two Nemesis beyblades: Prototype Nemesis and Diablo Nemesis. Diablo Nemesis is stronger than Prototype Nemesis in both the animé and real life. And it is the heaviest and one of the most popular beyblades in the world. All Nemesis beyblades are balance type. L-Drago is the third most popular beyblade. There are four L-Drago beyblades: Lightning L-Drago, Meteo L-Drago, L-Drago Destructor and L-Drago Guardian. L-Drago Guardian is not seen in the animé. All L-Drago beyblades are Reverse(Left)-rotating beyblades. They are very strong both in the animé and real life. L-Drago beyblades can absorb other beyblades' power. L-Drago Guardian is a defense type beyblade and all the other L-Drago beyblades are attack type. The strongest beyblade in real life is Twisted Tempo. It is a defense type beyblade. Its defense is almost unbeatable. Even Wing Pegasis' attack can't break its defense. It is completely circular in shape which makes is a 'Balanced' beyblade. Before the release of Diablo Nemesis, It was the heaviest beyblade of all time. Now it is the second heaviest, it spins very fast and it can spin for a very long time. It has the best defense and it can attack as well. So no beyblade can beat it without 'A lot of luck'. The only weakness it has is 'The Spiral Staircase Of Death' which makes it unbalanced after spinning about two minutes. But in most battles, Twisted Tempo will defeat its opponent in a very short time. Phantom Orion is a stamina type beyblade. It has the most stamina in all beyblades. If not attacked, it can spin for the longest period of time. It has ball bearings in it and it can spin in almost all solid surfaces. But its defense is 'Terrible'. Wing Pegasis is an attack type beyblade. It weights over 45g and it attacks with the strongest hits. It is heavy, fast and very low. So it can provide strong hits below the metal wheel to make the opponent unbalanced and then send it flying outside the stadium with another strong hit. But it can't spin for very long. Anyway, it is not very popular but it is one of the strongest beyblades of all time.

Burst System

There is not much information on this new series, but we can conclude that the Burst System have Beys that are consisted of 3 parts: The Layer, The Disk, and The Driver. Also the beyblades will fall apart after a heavy hit, this will create an explosion or burst gimmick. With the beyblades will also be sold a device called a beylogger which will measure the launch speed, record wins and losses and finally count the wins and losses at tournaments. Using an app the beylogger will be given points which can be uploaded to a cloud like system to rank players worldwide.

Stadiums

All Beyblade battles take place in a special arena called a Beystadium. Each stadium has its own abilities that will help or hinder the blades during the matches. Most stadiums are standard, while others have gravity effects and more.

The only thing to edit the stadium and battles are traps and parts to add on.

Some stadiums have what some call cyclone point the name coming from series 2 : Beyblade Metal Masters. This part is electronic. It spins the Beyblade and shoots it in a random direction.

Types of Beyblades

Each Beyblade has a different type. It determines what Type they are best at. The types follow a "Rock-Paper-Scissors" sort of program: Attack beats Stamina, Stamina beats Defense, Defense beats Attack. Also there is a "Balance" type listed below.

Attack: These Beyblades specialize in attacking other Beyblades. They battle fiercely and try to knock out the other Beyblade as fast as they can. They tend to outperform Stamina-Type Beyblades due to their lack of defense.

Defense: These Beyblades specialize in using defense. Just like the saying "the best offense is a good defense", they stay in one place and defend themselves, becoming almost immune to attacking Beyblades, thus making an Attack-Types mismatched against this type. They stay in place to defend.

Stamina: These Beyblades specialize in stamina. They are used so they can out-spin the enemy Bey and win. In exchange for a lack of power, their stamina last-longer against other Type of Beyblades making them naturally advantageous over Defense-Types, which focus on resisting hits.

Balance: These Beyblades specialize in a mix of the other three types listed above, giving them no glaring strengths or weaknesses. They use a mix of Attack, Defense, and Stamina Types put together to make an even mix to win.
