The badminton women's singles tournament at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games took place from 11 to 19 August at Riocentro – Pavilion 4. On July 21, the seeding was decided.[1]

The event was won by two time and reigning world champion Carolina Marín of Spain who defeated P. V. Sindhu of India. Nozomi Okuhara of Japan won the bronze medal after China's Li Xuerui was forced to withdraw. This was the first medal of any colour for Spain in Olympic badminton and this was also the first time the China failed to make to the podium since 1996.

The medals were presented by Juan Antonio Samaranch Salisachs, IOC member, Spain and David Cabello, Executive Board Member of the BWF.

Competition format

The tournament started with a group phase round-robin followed by a knockout stage.
