BGMEA University of Fashion and Technology or BUFT is a university in Bangladesh.[1][2] It was established with the aim to produce technically competent human resources for the Ready Made Garments sector of the country. It was established by the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association in 1999. It started functioning in 2000 and was affiliated to the National University, Bangladesh in 2001. BUFT, in collaboration with international organizations such as United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), European Union (EU), German Technical Co-operation (GTZ), and the South Asia Enterprise Development fund (SEDF), is working for further growth and development.

Academic departments

B.Sc. program

B.Sc. (Honours) program in Apparel Manufacture & Technology is a four years course designed to provide the students with a foundation in the technology and managerial area of apparel manufacturing. To acquire B.Sc. (Hons) degree a student has to earn at least 120 credits from a combination of courses offered by BIFT. After completion of the program a student will be competent as a Quality Assurance Manager, Sample Room Manager, Supply Chain Manager, Industrial Engineer, Merchandiser, Production Manager, Factory Manager, and Compliance Manager in the RMG sector.

Students learn the skills of fashion designing and how to transform their conceptual skill into finished garments. To acquire B.Sc. (Hons) degree a student has to earn at least 120 credits from a combination of courses offered by BIFT. After completion of the program students will be competent as a Designer, Design Studio Manager, Fashion Illustrator, Product Developer, Sample Developer, Pattern Maker, Quality Assurance Manager, Retailer, Merchandiser & Garments technologist.

B.Sc. Honors Program in Knitwear Manufacture & Technology is a four-year honors course to provide the students a foundation in the technology and managerial aspects of knitwear manufacturing (cut and sew knitwear and fully fashioned knitwear). To acquire B.Sc. Honors degree in KMT a student has to earn at least 120 credits. This is an extensive course which teaches the whole process of knitwear manufacturing, quality control, compliance, knitwear dyeing and printing and knitwear merchandising. After completion of the courses, students will be competent as Quality Assurance Manager, Sample Room Manager, Supply Chain Manager, Industrial Engineer, Merchandiser, Production Manager, Factory Manager, and Compliance Manager.

Objective: B.Sc. Program in B.Sc. in Textile Management is a four- year course designed to provide the students with a sound foundation in the technology and managerial aspects of Textile Manufacturing and Management. To acquire B. Sc degree a student has to earn 152 credits from a combination of courses offered by BUFT. After successful completion of this program a student will be professionally competent to choose his career in the area of Textile industry as Quality Assurance Manager, Sample Room Manager, Supply Chain Manager, Industrial Engineer, Merchandiser, Production Manager, Factory Manager, and Compliance Manager in the primary Textile and RMG sector at home and abroad.

Objective: B.Sc. Program in B.Sc. in Textile Engineering is a four -year course designed to provide the students with a sound foundation in the technology and managerial aspects of Textile manufacturing. To acquire B. Sc degree a student has to earn 154 credits from a combination of course offered by BUFT. After successful completion of this program a student will be professionally competent to choose his career as Textile Engineer, Quality Assurance Manager, Sample Room Manager, Supply Chain Manager, Industrial Engineer, Merchandiser, Production Manager, Factory Manager, Compliance Manager in the primary Textile and RMG sector at home and abroad.

MBA program

MBA in Apparel Merchandising is a two-year full-time Masters program. A student has to earn 60 credits to be eligible for MBA Degree. After completion of the program, a student will be competent to join as merchandisers in the RMG sector.

The MBA and B.Sc. Honors Courses are governed by the rules and regulations of BUFT approved by the academic council of the National University.

Facilities

BUFT is situated in Uttara Model Town of Dhaka Metropolitan City. It occupies about 50,000 square foot of floor space of classrooms, laboratory, library, faculty rooms, auditorium, students' common room, and office rooms. The laboratories include computer lab, CAD lab, sewing lab, knit lab, textile testing lab, pattern lab, and product development lab.

There are 4000 books and journals in BUFT library. Students have the broadband internet facilities free of cost. All classroom, library, laboratory, faculty rooms, office, auditorium are air conditioned. Classrooms are fitted with overhead projectors, multimedia and other teaching aids. BUFT has rented another building for campus 2 in Azampur where classes are being taken. It occupies 8000 square feet.

Culture and activities

Extra-curricular activities include sports, cultural program and co-curricular activities. BUFT students organize fashion shows with their created dresses and act as models in the fashion shows, participate in the BATEXPO, and contributes BATEXPO fashion shows by providing self-designed dress for the models. BUFT faculties and students contribute to BATEXPO fashion show management each year.

International cooperation

An agreement of cooperation was signed with Wuhan Textile University to develop a joint undergraduate major for fashion design.[3]

In August 30, 2015, BGMEA University of Fashion and Technology (BUFT) and Goethe-Institut in Bangladesh signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This MoU is a framework of mutual interest in the fields of educational and academic exchanges, joint fashion competitions, research, internships, and academic transfer agreements and will encourage international cultural exchanges between BUFT and Goethe-Institut. Under the MoU, both parties will host local and international fashion workshops and exhibitions for German and Bangladeshi students.[4]
